Read More	Mary Walsh Ruell, 96, of Ashland, widow of Laurent Joe Ruell, died at home on June 21. Born on July 4, 1916 in Hamilton, Mass., she was the daughter of E. Lillian and Thomas Walsh, immigrants from County Galway, Ireland. She grew up in South Hamilton, attending the local schools. She studied Business Education and received her Bachelors degree from Salem State College in 1937. Her first teaching job brought her to Ashland High School. In 1939 she left Ashland for Old Lyme, Conn. and taught there for three years. When WWII broke out she moved with her mother to Providence, R.I., teaching in the first public high school in East Greenwich. Wanting to take part in the war effort, she worked at Walsh-Kaiser Shipyard in Rhode Island and volunteered at the United War Fund and the American Red Cross. She became a fundraiser for Brown University after the war. In 1949, on a trip to visit old friends in Ashland, she reunited with Laurent Ruell and the couple married six months later. They raised five children and lived on Hill Street in the Ruell family home. She returned to teaching in 1955 working for seven years at Bristol High School and fifteen at Laconia High School. In her spare time she earned a Masters of Education from Plymouth State College and retired in 1977. For 25 years, beginning in June 1988, Mary was the Ashland correspondent for the Record Enterprise, formerly the Record Citizen. Mary was extremely active in community affairs. She served on the Ashland School Board, as Memorial Park Trustee, as the town representative to the Pemi-Baker Home Health Agency, on the Budget Committee and other Town committees including Recycling, Elderly Exemptions and the Tennis Courts. She was appointed to the New Hampshire State Committee on Aging. Mary was an active volunteer and often served as an officer in numerous organizations including. Ashland Historical Society, Squam River Covered Bridge Committee, Memorial Park Committee, Ashland Community Closet and Community Center, Ashland Woman's Club, New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs, Fourth of July Committee, Plymouth Area Community Closet, FISH, Ashland Beach-Booster Association, Squam Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, Rural Arts Program, League of N.H. Craftsmen, Speare Hospital Association, Lakes Region Retired Educators, New Hampshire Retired Educators, State School Board Association, St. Agnes Church, Youth at Risk Committee, American Cancer Society, Democratic Town Committee, and Ashland Garden Club. She received numerous recognitions and awards for her exceptional contributions to the community. She loved art, flowers, travel, politics and literature. She enjoyed painting, rug hooking and weaving. She was the beloved mother of David of Ashland, Stephen and his wife Margaret of Canaan, Me., Ellen and her husband Jay Himmelstein of Worcester, Mass., Kevin and his wife Neidi Suursoo of Bolton, Vt., and Janice and her husband Stephen Moassgeau of Chelmsford, Mass.; grandmother of Morgan, Wesley, and Gwen Ruelle, Nathan Ruell, Julia Himmelstein, Patrick and Rosemary Mongeau, Jesse Himmelstein and his wife Benedicte Meillon, Jolie Ruelle and her husband Ezra Wube, Emily Ruell and her husband Corey Handlesman, Lillian Mongeau Hughes and her husband Calder Hughes; and great grandmother of Zoe and Leah Himmelstein and Amora Ruelle. She also has many loving nieces and nephews. Calling hours were at at the Dupuis Funeral Home, Hill Ave in Ashland on Tuesday, June 25 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 p.m. Funeral will be on Wednesday at St. Agnes Church at 11 a.m. Record Enterprise, June 26, 2013. Friends and colleagues throughout the town of Ashland, along with those in surrounding communities who knew her were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mary Ruell, one of the town's most beloved and dedicated residents who died on June 21st at her home. • • According to her obituary Mary Walsh Ruell was born July 4, 1916 in Hamilton, Mass. to Thomas and E. Lillian Walsh. She was raised in South Hamilton and following high school studied Business Education at Salem State College. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1937 and moved to New Hampshire for her first teaching job at Ashland High School. In 1939 she moved to Old Lyme, Conn for three years before returning home to Massachusetts where she worked and volunteered during WWII. A trip to visit friends in Ashland in 1949 however reunited Mary with Laurent, Joe, Ruell and changed the course of her life. They were married six months later and Mary went on to become an integral part of her new community. She and her husband raised five children in their home on Hill Street and in 1955 she decided to return to teaching. Mary taught for many years at Bristol and Laconia High Schools. Somewhere in between her family, wrote. She managed in her spare time to earn her Masters of Education from Plymouth State College before retiring in 1977. Retirement was not leisure time for Mary. She remained involved in not only the town but on regional and state levels. How she managed to do everything she did was amazing, said Caroline Gosse who volunteered with her and called Mary a friend for the past twenty-five years. She brought a lot of excitement to the town. Mary served locally on the Ashland Historical Society, the Garden Club, Community Center and Community Closet. She was also active ay St. Agnes Church and was instrumental in the Ashland Women's Club and their Community Improvement Project which brought about the construction of the Squam River Covered Bridge. In addition to all of that she served as a member of the Ashland School Board, a Memorial Park trustee, represented Ashland at the Pemi-Baker Home Health Agency and served on the town budget committee along with numerous other committees. Through the years she received many awards and recognitions for her work. "Anything that was going on in town Mary was there volunteering to help," said Ashland Town Clerk and Tax Collector, Pat Tucker. In fact Mary was so dedicated to the Ashland community they in 2003 the town felt it only fitting to dedicate the Town Report to her. "We really lost one of our matriarchs, Tucker said. Regionally and statewide her impact was also felt. She gave her time to the American Cancer Society and was involved in the League of New Hampshire Retired Educators. From 1998 until 2001 Mary served a term on the New Hampshire Committee on Aging after being appointed by Governor Jeanne Shaheen. "Mary was my mentor who got me involved in more things than I can recall," said Gosse. "She never ran out of steam. She was one great lady and the town should have a day of mourning for her." With all she was involved in however, Mary's favorite endeavor was the Fourth of July Committee, perhaps no real surprise since she was born on July 4th. Gosse, who also serves on the committee, said Mary never paid attention to the fact it was her birthday. Instead she worked hard all day to ensure the celebration was a success for residents and visitors who annually flocked to Ashland each year for their renowned fireworks and activities. With Mary's passing Gosse said the Fourth of July Committee feels a huge loss and shall look for an appropriate way to honor and memorialize her amazing contributions. "Mary left a legacy of Civic Responsibility and I hope that will continue" said Gosse. Last but certainly not least, Mary Ruell served Ashland's Talk of the Towns correspondent for The Record Enterprise for the past twenty-five years and her son David continues to serve the paper as correspondent covering meetings of the select board and school board in Ashland. "We are honored to have Mary as part of our extended family or correspondents," said Record Enterprise Editor Brendan Berube.
