They then made their way to Coolspring Township, Mercer Co., PA where her father, Isaac Waugh, bought land for 280 dollars. Mary grew up and was educated in Pennsylvania. She taught school for several years before marrying William Henry Irwin on November 11, 1852 in Harrisville, PA. Mary and William had seven sons and three daughters born between 1853 and 1874. Their second born, Eliza B., died at the age of 3 in 1858 in Mercer County. The family moved to a farm in Clinton County, Iowa in 1866 and after the children were raised Mary and William moved to Sac County, Iowa, where they bought a home in Odebolt in 1895. Their oldest child, George, died of erysipelas at age 34 in 1887, leaving a wife and four children. Early in life Mary united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Will passed away in 1910 and in 1912 Mary began to live among her children. She was spending the fall with her daughter, Mrs. L.H. (Jennie) Davenport, at the time of her death due to heart failure on November 9, 1918. The funeral was held at the Davenport home at 1:30 o'clock on Monday afternoon, November 11th, 1918. Owing to the quarantine regulations (during the Spanish flu epidemic), the funeral was partially private. Mary was survived by eight children: Lewis (Ed), Charles, Walter, Aletta (Lettie Amos Vaughan), Eva Jane (Jennie Davenport), William, James and Austin.
