He was one of a family of twelve. At the age of twelve, he and his parents removed to Mercer county, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. On November 11, 1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Waugh of Mercer. At the age of 28 he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. and Mrs. Irwin were the parents of ten children. During the active part of William’s life he was a farmer. He had a 100 acre farm in Pennsylvania which he sold for $65 an acre in 1866 and came to Clinton County, IA. where he raised his family. In Clinton County, he was a member of the Township Board of Trustee for two terms and was elected Assessor in the fall of 1878. His farm was 248 acres and he lived on Sec. 28, P.O. Elwood, IA. Two of the children were born here. In 1878 the children began moving to Sac County, IA. Lewis Edward, who was called Ed or Edd, was the first in 1878; then Charles in 1880, followed by Walter in 1884m George in 1885 and Will in 1889. William and Mary desired to live among their children in 1895 they followed and bought a home in Odebolt. James and Austing stayed behind on the farm, then followed in 1898. William Irwin died at 2 o’clock on Wednesday, December 21, 1910, at his home in Odebolt, being past 80 years of age. He had not been well for several weeks, but not suffering from any special ailment until the last 10 days when he was taken ill with pneumonia. The old gentleman had lived to a ripe old age, had lived a clean and honorable life and more than than, the name which he had carried from the Pennsylvania hills would be perpetuated, sons and daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren and so on would grow up as honored citizens.
