Description	:	Matthew Taylor was the son of Captain Matthew and Elizabeth Archibald Taylor. He was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, in 1755, and when he was 7 years old, his parents moved to Nova Scotia after the French War. In Truro, Nova Scotia, he married his cousin, Rebeckah Archibald. They owned property but sold out and moved with their family to Ohio, along with his brother, Samuel, and others from Nova Scotia, about the year 1798. Read More	Matthew Taylor was the son of Captain Matthew and Elizabeth Archibald Taylor. He was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, in 1755, and when he was 7 years old, his parents moved to Nova Scotia after the French War. "Soon after the birth of son, Samuel, Matthew III Taylor, moved his family from Truro, Nova Scotia, to Londonderry, New Hampshire, thence to Chillicothe, Northwest Territory. They were enroute by ship on the second leg of their journey when daughter, Rebecca may, was born, as they were rounding Cape May, New Jersey, into Philadelphia. As this was late October, they may have tarried for awhile, through the winter, somewhere east of the Allegany Mountains. A sizable colony of "Scotch-Irish" had settled in what is now Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where they may have found old family friends, even relatives, to spend the winter with. Their route westward from Philadelphia would have led along the "Lancaster Pike" to Lancaster, Pennsylvania (roadway completed in 1795), thence by (slightly) imporoved "Forbes Road" to Pittsburgh (army road carved out of the forest for the subjugation of the French Fort, Duquesne, now Pittsburgh, during the French & Indian War, 1762). Out of Pittsburgh, they most probably would have continued overland to Wheeling, Virginia, thence following the new "Zanes's Trace" through the forest to Chillicothe. One of the original settlers in Chillicothe, in 1796, was Scotch-Irishman, John McCoy, from Franklin County, Pennsylvania. An alternative route would have been flat-boat from Pittsburgh down the Ohio River to Portsmouth, thence up the Scioto River to Chillicothe. Matthew III's brother, Robert, utilized both routes moving his family and freight to Chillicothe in 1806." As stated above, his brother Robert, and wife, Mehetable Wilson Taylor, joined him in Ohio in 1806. The first mill erected in the township was by Matthew Taylor, on Alum Creek, near its mouth, about the year 1807 or 1808. It was quite an acquisition to the settlement; but it has long since disappeared, and no vestige remains to show where it stood. 1812- Mathew received Land Patents #1623 (NW 1/4 Sec 1) and #1624 (SW1/4SEc8); Samuel claimed the SE1/4Sec5, and Richard Suddicks, the NW1/4Sec5 and the NE1/4Sec6; all in T11N R21W, Matthews Survey, Franklin Co., OH. Robert's claim was on the Refugee Tract near the intersection of the National Road (now US40) and Walnut Creed. (Sec 31 T12N R21W) 1814- October 10, Matthew & David (sons) were appointed administrators of the estate of Mathew Taylor, with Richard Suddicks (brother-in-law) and Abiathar Taylor (nephew) as sureties. I have located most of Matthew's children, however, there is said to have been a son named Isaac, b. 1799, whom I have not located.
