OBIT: Matthias Dewiscourt, the second pioneer of the valley to pass away this week, died early Wednesday morning of cancer of the stomach from which he had suffered for several years. The last few months he had been confined to his bed at his home at 409 West Ninth Street. Mr. Dewiscourt was widely known in the Kittias Valley where he made his home for many years, living until a few years ago on his farm a mile north of the Sander's ranch. He had many friends here and was an ardent sportsman, being especially fond of blooded bird dogs which he bred at one time. The father of several sons who have gained prominence in athletics of different kinds, he was an interested and active fan at all football and baseball games. The younger son, Nick, has gained national prominence as a heavy-weight wrestler and is conceded to be one of the foremost in the country. The deceased was born in Harborn, Luxemburg, Germany on February 24, 1852, of French parentage. Coming to the United States 19 years later, he settled in San Francisco. He was married there in 1875 to Miss Sophia Fathauer who survives him as do five children, Mrs. H. E. Carsendden of Ellensburg, Henry of Whitefish, Montana, John of Auburn, Emil of Centralia and Nick whose home is in Los Angeles. Every member of his family was at his bedside at the time of his death. Funeral services are to be held from St Andrew's Church on Friday at 10 a.m. The Ellensburg Capital, August 2, 1923
