Mr. Kemp had been ailing all summer and some weeks ago underwent an operation for relief at the Sacred Heart hospital. He suffered greatly during his illness and for some time it was realized that his condition was hopeless. Mathias Kemp was born at Ulni, in the grand duchy of Luxembourg, Europe, on April 4, 1848, and when four years of age came with his parents to America. Shortly after their arrival in the states they settled at St. Donatus, Iowa, where Mathias attended a school and worked on a farm. In 1875 Mr. Kemp came to Plymouth county and bought land in section 28 in America township. He was united in marriage the same year with Miss Josephine Kaiser, the marriage taking place at the old St. Joseph's church in this city. They lived on the farm until ten years ago when they moved to LeMars and bought a residence in which to spend their declining days and enjoy a well earned rest after years of honorable toil and endeavor, which were crowned with success. Mr. Kemp leaves to mourn his death, his devoted wife and a large family of children, who are: H.B. Kemp, of America township; Mrs. Nic Relstroffer, of Marion township; Joseph J. Kemp, residing on the home farm; Mrs. Geo Lucey, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. I.H. Lieb, of Alton vicinity; Peter Kemp, of Iona Lake, Minn.; Mrs. Thos. Trautt, of LeSeuer, Minn., and Misses Margaret and Anna Kemp, of LeMars. There are twenty-one grandchildren. Mr. Kemp is also survived by a brother, Nic Kemp, of Petaluma, Cal., and four sisters, Mrs Pletchette, of LeMars; Sister Demetra, of Milwaukee; Mrs. Nic Marx, of Nashville, Kansas and Miss Anna Kemp, of Quincy, IL. Mr. Kemp was one of the well known men of the community in which he lived for over forty years. He was a successful farmer and landowner and during his residence in America township hold various offices and was active in local affairs. He was a member of St. Joseph's church and of the St. Joseph's Men's society, and of the Mutual Protective Catholic association. Mr. Kemp was an upright citizen who enjoyed the esteem and confidence of a large number of people. He was a loving husband and father, a staunch friend and neighbor and will be greatly missed by many old friends. The funeral services were held yesterday at St. Joseph's Catholic church and were very largely attended.
