Mathilda Sophia Auch was born Nov. 11, 1907, in Tuttle, to Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Weisenberger) Auch. She was raised and educated in Tuttle. On Feb. 17, 1929, Tillie married Fred W. Aichele in Tuttle. Five of their seven children were born while living and farming in the Tuttle area. In 1941, the family moved to a farm south of Driscoll. Their last two children were born while living in Driscoll. God and her church were a big part of Tillie’s life. She was an active member ber of Driscoll United Methodist Church until it closed, after which she attended Grace Lutheran Church with daughter-in-law, Jean. She attended United Methodist Women of Sterling and was a member of the Sterling Prayer Band and VFW Auxiliary. She served as treasurer of Thelma Township for over 50 years. She attended her yard, planted a large vegetable garden and maintained it carefully. She also enjoyed playing the piano, embroidering and crocheting. Fred died July 5, 1965, in an accident in Driscoll and her friends and local neighbors were very helpful and caring the remainder of her life. She learned to drive the car and obtained a license at the age of 58 after the passing of husband Fred, and raised the youngest son, Lee, who was under the age of 10 at the time. She was very capable of providing a cup of coffee or a meal to any folks who might happen by, planned or unexpectedly. Though she kept a tidy house and did her cooking she also got around to various functions with daughter, Luella. She lived independently on the farm until she was over 100 years of age along with son Glen and daughter-in-law Jean, who had separate housing. She helped to milk cows and raised chickens for many of her years on the farm. While maintaining her responsibilities, she managed some time to do her daily walking, her bible reading, and prayer. At age 107, she was still walking quite capably with her walker. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to continue reading due to failing sight. She also had limited hearing but sufficient sight and hearing to manage with some extra attention. She was a soft-spoken, genuinely kind person and dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed by all. She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many thanks go to the folks at the Baptist Care Center who loved and cared for her as if a member of the family these last few years of her life. She is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law, Bernell “Ike,” Bismarck, Leroy (JoEllen), Steele, Floyd (Beverly), Bismarck, and Lee, Sterling; two daughters and sons-in-law, Luella (Benny) Rath, Sterling, and Shirley (Ron) Hankel, LaMoure; her daughter-in-law, Jean Aichele, Driscoll; 22 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Tillie joins her husband, Fred; and a son, Glen, in heaven; her parents, Gottlieb and Elizabeth; two sisters, Hilda Carlson and Leona Iles; her brother, Bill Auch; her granddaughter, Tari LaLonde; a great-grandson, Rusty Aichele; and a son-in-law, Jerry Buck. Box 948, Marion, Ind., 46952, or a charity of the donor’s choice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Bismarck Tribune, North Dakota, 11 November 2012 For most of his 22 years, Zach Rath has celebrated his birthday with two German chocolate cakes - one for him, and one for his great-grandmother, Tillie Aichele, who will be turning 105 on Sunday. “It’s been pretty special,” he said. “A lot of people don’t have great-grandparents, but my great-grandma is still healthy.” Tillie has some trouble with her memory, eyesight and hearing, but is still able to move around with the assistance of her walker and enjoys watching re-runs of the “Lawrence Welk Show.” She remembers bits and pieces of her younger years -growing up in Tuttle and working in the grocery store. She married Fred Aichele in 1929. The couple moved to a farm near Driscoll in 1940 and raised seven children - Ike, Roy, Floyd, Luella, Shirley, Glen, and Lee Alan. “We got along OK,” Tillie said, “They were all good kids.” Tillie’s daughter, Luella Rath, remembers going to the outhouse at the farm and getting electricity for the first time in the 1950s. “Things certainly were different then,” Luella said. Ike Aichele, Tillie’s son, remembers working outdoors with his father and brothers - plowing, harvesting and feeding the cattle. Meanwhile, his sisters would help their mother with housework. “That’s all I ever got done was cleaning and cooking,” Tillie said. “Thursday was my baking day and I always had cookies on hand.” Tillie and her girls had jobs outside of the house as well. Luella specifically remembers bundling stacks of grain and milking the cows. “I can see it ... we’re going out to the barn and milking the cows and getting away from it all,” Luella said. “I think it was very relaxing for her (Tillie) ... she always enjoyed it.” One of Ike’s favorite memories of his mother is the chickens she raised each year. “We would receive 150 baby chicks through the mail,” Ike said. “In the spring, we ate it (chicken) every day for several weeks and we never got tired of it.” Tillie lost her husband in 1965, but continued to live on the Driscoll farm until she was 102, when she moved to Bismarck Baptist Home, where she now lives. Tillie’s birthday party will be held at Bismarck Baptist home today. Many family members will be in attendance, including Zach Rath. He jokes that his great-grandmother will “probably still be kicking for another 10 years or so.” Tillie is looking forward to seeing her family at her birthday party. “I’ve got a pretty good life,” she said. “I don’t have a complaint. ...
