The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran church in Alvord, and the edifice was packed to the doors by the friends of the family, while many were unable to gain admission. The start was made from the home to the church at 1 o’clock and fully six autoes accompanied the procession. Services were conducted by the Rev Edward Goeringer of Rock Rapids, and interment was in the Lutheran cemetery in Alvord. Matilda Schemmel was born in Rock Valley, August 13, 1888, and when a small child came with the family to Lyon county to make her home. July 25, 1913, the deceased was married to Henry Scherff, and they made their home on a farm belonging to Mr Scherff’s father in Cleveland township, some six miles southwest of Rock Rapids. On July 3rd, a son was born to them, and fifteen days later Mrs Scherff succumbed to a fever which developed. She was given the most careful attention by the family doctor and physicians summoned from Luverne and Sioux City, but her life could not be saved. Mrs Scherff was one of the best known ladies in the vicinity of her home, and was loved and respected by all. She was a lady of high character, pleasant and accommodating, an ideal neighbor, and a firm friends. The esteem in which she was held was attested by the beautiful floral offering, and the immense throng which assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to a loved member of the community. Besides the bereaved husband and son, who will never know a mother’s love, the deceased is survived by numerous relatives who have the sincerest sympathy of a host of friends to their hour of deep trial.
