Description	:	Matilda M. Wallace was born in North Carolina to William E. and Levina (maiden name unknown) Wallace. She had 1 sister, Ella (Ellen), 2 brothers, William E. "Will" and James W. Wallace (my grandfather). After her mother died, her father, William E. Sr., age 50, married Sarah Tucker, age 20. They had 5 children, R. They had 3 sons, Charles Cleveland, Walter Leslie, and Russell Wallace. 1865 In March of 1865, the third child of William and Levina Wallace, Matilda was born at Turnersburg, Iredell County, NC. She had 2 older siblings, Ellen "Ella", and William "Will" Wallace. 1869 In June of 1869, their fourth child of William and Levina Wallace was born, James W. Wallace, (My Grandfather). 1870 In THE 1870 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 15 of 22, lines 11-17, I find Matilda M. Wallace, age 5. She is living with her parents, William E., age 40, and Levina (Lovina), age 37; siblings, Ella M., age 10, William E., age 7, and James W., age 1. Also, her paternal, widowed grandmother, Keziah Knustep Wallace, age 80, is living with them. This is the last time we find grandmother Keziah. Their last name here is spelled Wallice. The family lives in the Turnersburg Township, Iredell, NC. The Post Office is County Line, NC. Dad, William is a farmer, Real Estate Value, $230.00. 1880 In THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 11 of 28, line 40, we find Matilda, age 15 (typo/age 12). She was age 5 in the 1970 Census), working as a Servant in the home of Lou M. Stokes, age 55, and her 2 young children. They are living in the Bryne Township No. 4, Surry County, NC. Also, her brother James W. Wallace, age 10, is living with a neighboring Stokes Family, David Stokes, age 19, his mother, Louisa M. Stokes, age 58, and David's nephew, and 2 sisters. He is a Servant, a Farm Laborer. These Stokes' Families may have been related to their Aunt Mary Matilda Wallace, William Sr., sister, who was married to Henry Stokes. Matilda is probably named after her. Her mother, Levina, also had a sister named Maltida Knox. In 1880 this family must have been having a really hard time. In THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 7 of 11, line 11, in the Cherry Lane Township, Alleghany County, NC., we find Matilda's sister Ella Wallace, age 20, living and working as a Servant, in the home of Aaron Woodruff, age 63, and his wife, Pheriba, age 54. In THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 2 of 40, lines 49 and 50, we find their father, William Sr. and brother, 16 year old William Jr. Their name is spelled "Wallis". They are living and working in Pilot Township, Surry County, NC. William Sr. is working as a Laborer in a Saw Mill, William Jr. is working as a Farm Laborer. It is marked that William was Married and William Jr. is Single. I did not find where their mother Levina was living. She may have been sick or maybe she died during child birth or shortly after, with R. Henry who was born in 1983. I think she may have died in 1883 or 1884. We do not have any more information about Levina. 1883 Birth of her brother, R. Henry Wallace on Jan 6. 1885 Her father William E. Wallace, age 50 (I think he would have been 55), marries Sarah Tucker, age 20, at her home in Rockford, Surry County, NC. on Sep. 13, 1885. 1890 History skips over 1890 due to a tragic fire that destroyed most of THE US FEDERAL CENSUSES. 1900 We next find Matilda in THE 1900 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 9 of 45, lines 27-31, with her children Charles C., age 15; Walter L., age 7; and Russell M., age 3. Also, her sister Ella M., age 41 is living with them in Bryan Township, District 0104, Surry County, NC. It list Maltilda and son, Charles as Farmers. They rented their home. Charles was the only one who could read and write. 1910 We find Matilda (Matildy) and her sister Ella, in THE 1910 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 13 of 36, lines 1-18. They could not read or write. They are living in a Institution called "The Surry County Home", in the Dobson District 0128, Mt. Airy Road, Surry County, NC. They are all listed as "INMATES". "Inmate" did not necessarily mean Jail or Prison, like we would think of today. They were residents and patients of this facility. During this time those who could not take care of themselves medical and or financially, nor had family members that could take care of them, were put into County homes. Some of these Institutions were called "THE POOR HOUSE". I do not know for sure if the following was their circumstances. POORHOUSES were tax-supported residential Institutions to which people were required to go if they could not support themselves. They were started as a method of providing a less expensive (to the taxpayers) alternative to what we would now days call "welfare"-what was called "outdoor relief" in those days. People requested help from the Community Overseer of the Poor (sometimes also called a POOR MASTER)- An elected town official. At times the "Superintendent or Overseer of the Poor" would make the decision if "someone" is to be at the County Home. If their was family that could take care of their loved one, but could not afford it financially, this relief program would try to help them with some financially aid. This "COUNTY HOME" was located on Leobran and Mt. Airy Road, Surry County, NC. The Industry Manager of this 'farm' was James W. Norman. If a person did not have family that could take care of their burial when they died, they would be buried in a P, sometimes called, THE POOR CEMETERY. Records were not always kept of the names etc. of those buried in these cemeteries. Many times it would be impossible to find any information of their burial places. Maltilda was with Ella. I have not found how long Ella was at this home. I think she probably died there. I have not found when or where she is buried. There's a lot more information on line about the POOR HOUSES. 1910 During this same time I found Matilda's 3 sons in 3 different homes. 1910 Census, page 12 of 36, lines 79-81, we find CHARLES CLEVE WALLACE, age 26, his wife Allina A., age 17, and their baby girl Alley, age 8 months. They are living with Allina's family at Fries, Grayson County, VA. He works at a Cotton Mill as a Weaver. 1910 Census, page 6 of 36, line 66, we find WALTER L. WALLACE, age 17, living as a Boarder in the home of Jasper and Martha Wilmoth and their 3 children. They live in Fries, Grayson County, VA. He works as a Weaver at the Cotton Mill. (Probably the same place his older brother works.). He is Single. 1910 Census, page 16 of 18, line # 60, we find RUSSELL WALLACE, age 13, listed as a Servant in the home of Docter and Thurrie Walker and their 2 children. They are living at Bryan, Surry County, NC. Russell's occupation is listed as doing Odd Jobs. 1920 We find Matilda in THE 1920 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 17 of 23, lines 35-42. Matilda was on line 42. She is a Servant in the home of Lacy A., age 38, and Dora Norman, age 30, and their 5 children, ages 4 to 12 years old. Matilda could not read or write. They were living in Bryan Township, Surry County, NC. Her employer Lacy was a Farmer. We do not know if Lacy Norman was related to the Industry Manager of THE SURRY COUNTY HOME. 1925 Matilda dies on Oct. 13, 1925 at the age of 60. She was still living and working as a HOUSE WOMAN for Lacy A. and Dora Norman. On her Certificate of Death, the Employer and Informant was L. A. Norman. She was buried at the UNION HILL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Union Hill Church Road, Mountain Park, Surry County, NC. This is the same cemetery that Lacy and Dora Norman is later buried in. They have a beautiful Headstone. I have more records and information of Matilda's sons and grandchildren. I will later share it, as time permits. If anyone has additional information about Matilda and her family, I would gladly appreciate it. My great aunt, Matilda, sister to my grandfather, James W. Wallace. They were the children of William and Levina Wallace. They had 2 other siblings Ella (Ellen) and William "Will" Wallace. Their mother, Levina, died around 1883. In 1885 their father married Sarah Clersy Tucker. William and Sarah had 5 children. Cora Lee, R. Henry, Frank Garfield, Lucy Jane and Sidney Harrison Wallace.
