Deceased was born in Bohemia, Feb. 24, 88 years ago. He was united in marriage with Rose Ruzicka Nov. 24, 1859. Mr. and Mrs. Ruzicka came to America in 1882. They settled at Blue Earth, Wis., where they lived two years. They then moved to Kimball, S.D. and in 1884 they moved to Howard county, which has been their home since. The survivors are: Four daughters - Mrs. Henry Buresh, Marion, IA; Mrs. August Lenius, Frazee, Minn.; Mrs. F.J. Maruska, Alta Vista; Mrs. Louis Buresh, Cresco; also survived by 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. His wife and three sons preceded him in death. Mr. Ruzicka was hard working man, a successful farmer, honest and upright in dealings with his fellowmen. He was held in high esteem by his neighbors and asquaintances. His remains are lying in state at Easler Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Mitchel, pastor of the Methodist church will officiate. Burial will be made in the Saratgoa cemetery afternoon. Howard County Times newspaper - Vol. 70, No.: 12, March 18, 1936, Page 4, col. 4 Cresco Library, Iowa - Howard/Winneshiek Counties Genealogical Society, Microfilm Roll 819-B (7/19/1933-6/17/1936) ------------------------------------------------------------ Immigration of Mike & Rose Ruzicka Mike & Rose Ruzicka emigrated from their home in Moravia in the Czech Republic with their five-year old daughter, Mary, and one-year old daughter, Francis, in the spring or summer of 1881. Mike and Rose made their way west to Wisconsin where Mike's brother, Albert Ruzicka, had been residing in Watterstown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin. Rose was pregnant with their third child, Clara, when they emigrated from Moravia and immigrated to the USA and made their way to Grant County, Wisconsin to the town of Blue River where Clara was born on August 8, 1881. Mike & Rose probably received letters from Mike's siblings, Katarina & Albert, whom immigrated to America and had made their way to southwest Wisconsin in 1874, praising the beautiful countryside, that look so much like their home in Moravia with the rich and prosperous land by which to make a good living and lots of fellow countrymen living in the area. It should also be noted that newspapers in the Czech Republic, relatives and some famous Czech citizens wrote praising letters back home to the "old world" about the bounty of land and their exciting travels in order to entice others to come to America. Mike and Rose made their way to South Dakota in Bruly County where their fourth daughter was born, Elizabeth, in October 1883. Then, in 1901, they moved to Iowa in the Saratoga Township area of Howard County joining his brother, Albert, and Albert's son, Frank, farming in the Saratoga and Chester, Iowa areas until their deaths. Based upon information from Ken Chromy of Nebraska, a descendant of Katarina Ruzicka (Ruzickova). Katarina emigrated from her home in Moravia, Czech Republic in 1874 with her brother, Albert & his wife, Anna (Marie), Ruzicka and their son - Frank, to southwest Wisconsin, residing in Iowa County, Wisconsin in the area surrounding the town of Cobb where Czech immigrants had been settling. Katarina remained in the Cobb, Wisconsin area until 1880 and then moved to Nebraska. In 1880, Albert was residing in the Watterstown Township area in Grant County farming and raising a family with four more daughters born in Grant County, Wisconsin before retiring to live in Howard County, Iowa. She in turn gave me the information. I put together all the families history except Aunt Fannie Leniur to which cousin Martha Thelan supplied me. Alert Manor Rt. 3 Box 17A Cresco, IA 52136 Page 1 Rosalia Ruzicka March 8, 1855 - June 1 or 3, 1935 Madien name Ruzicka, but no relation to her husband Mike Ruzicka. One brother - Anton. Three sisters. One half sister or brother. Her mother died when Rosalia was nine years old. Father remarried and has 1 child (mentioned above). Rosalia the youngest and only one that came to America, but never really heard from her family, got one letter from brother Anton and kept it for years. Anton didn't want them to leave Czechslovakia, so followed them for miles when on their way to America. She was born & raised catholic, turned protestant after marrying in Nov. 1975 [1875] in Czechslovakia. She and Mike landed in America in 1881. Died June 1, 1935 at 2 o'clock A.M. Page 2 Mathias (Mike) Ruzicka Feb 24, 1848 - Mar 16, 1936 His mother died quite young. His father lived to be old, after his wife's death, he lived with his children. Mathias or Mike was a mason by trade, learned it in Czechslovakia. At the age of 21 years old, he went in the army for 3 years. Took his training in Germany.
