Description	:	Matthew Evans Weathers, Sr. was born November 20th, 1924 at 20 Wallace Street in the Watts Mill Village of Laurens, South Carolina. The youngest son of the late Dessie Young Weathers and Cordia Leomi Byrd Weathers, he was named after his paternal grandfather. A graduate of Ford High School, Matthew enlisted in the US Navy just after his 18th birthday and served in WW2. Read More	Matthew Evans Weathers, Sr. was born November 20th, 1924 at 20 Wallace Street in the Watts Mill Village of Laurens, South Carolina. The youngest son of the late Dessie Young Weathers and Cordia Leomi Byrd Weathers, he was named after his paternal grandfather. A graduate of Ford High School, Matthew enlisted in the US Navy just after his 18th birthday and served in WW2. A short time after his discharge, he decided to join the US Air Force where he served until 1953. He married the former Frances Cathcart on September 21, 1951 in Laurens, SC and became a step-father to Donald Franklin Myers. Of this union of Matthew and Frances came David Francis Weathers, John Daniel Weathers, Ida Kathryn Weathers and Matthew Evans Weathers, Jr. Matthew had shortly retired from the J.P.Stephens Watts Plant, where he was a weaver and worked the 3rd shift for about 30 years before his death from cancer. He was talented and gifted in many areas of his life, an avid reader, enjoyed hunting and fishing, his family and his pets. He is survived by his wife, Frances, his children, many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Also two sisters, Ida Mae Weathers Hammond, Virginia Weathers West, and two brothers, Walker Young Weathers and Fred Earl Weathers. Brothers Clyde, Ernest, Brooks and Dessie Lee preceded him in death. Gravesite services were held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, where he was laid to rest. Kennedy Mortuary was in charge. .............. In September of 2016, Matthew and his brother, Walker, were inducted into the Military Veterans Hall of Heroes for Laurens County, SC. Matthew and Walker's customized shadowboxes will be on display until next September 2018 at the Court House at the Hillcrest Square Laurens County Complex.
