Description	:	Mattie L. Mereness, 81, pioneer resident of the Verdon vicinity, passed away Wednesday morning, May 13, 1953, at the Aberdeen hospital following a lingering illness. Mattie L. Bacon was born to Robert and Mary Bacon at Hammondburg, Iowa, Feb. 26, 1872. When she was two years of age, her family moved to Council Grove, Kan. She came to South Dakota at the age of 18, and five years later was married to John Mereness on Nov. 27, 1895. To this union four children were born. Mereness, 81, pioneer resident of the Verdon vicinity, passed away Wednesday morning, May 13, 1953, at the Aberdeen hospital following a lingering illness. Mattie L. Bacon was born to Robert and Mary Bacon at Hammondburg, Iowa, Feb. 26, 1872. When she was two years of age, her family moved to Council Grove, Kan. She came to South Dakota at the age of 18, and five years later was married to John Mereness on Nov. 27, 1895. To this union four children were born. One son died in infancy and a daughter, Edith Whiteaker, passed away in 1950. The couple lived on a farm south of Verdon until the death of Mr. Mereness in 1944, when she moved to Conde, spending the past several months at the homes of her children. Mrs. Mereness was baptized and became a member of the Methodist church when a young girl in Kansas. She was also a member of the Donald Lewis Auxiliary at Conde, and Rebekah lodge at Verdon. The departed was a kind, loving and sympathetic wife and mother and was deeply loved by all who knew her. Her high ideals in life gained for her the fellowship of all who came in contact with her. Surviving relatives are a son, Oren, and daughter, Mrs. Olive Bymers of Verdon; four half brothers, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p. m., at the Conde Methodist church.
