Description	:	MRS. MATTIE LULA MAE WINSTON LUNSFORD, 84 years old, of White Hall, Arkansas, died June 29, 1998, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She was born on February 12, 1914, at Sheridan, a daughter of the late William Andrew Winston and Martha Elizabeth Bright Winston. She was reared up in Sheridan receiving her early education growing up and working hard labor pulling, picking and filling the long cotton sacks around the farms near Sherill, Arkansas where the Lunsford family lived for a time in the Fifties before moving back to Rison, Arkansas. She was born on February 12, 1914, at Sheridan, a daughter of the late William Andrew Winston and Martha Elizabeth Bright Winston. She was reared up in Sheridan receiving her early education growing up and working hard labor pulling, picking and filling the long cotton sacks around the farms near Sherill, Arkansas where the Lunsford family lived for a time in the Fifties before moving back to Rison, Arkansas. She met and married Henry "Buddy" Black Lunsford, also from Sheridan at the time, having a large family of children, with four sets of twins of the fourteen children. Sadly, the couple lost a baby, Donnie Lee in 1940. She was a loving homemaker in her later years raising the many children. She had many enjoyable hobbies such as quilt making--she made many of those decorated with the names of her grandchildren and hand painted bears, clowns, and other decorative objects. She enjoyed gardening, and painted many pictures of indians, tigers, and landscape scenes in her limited spare time. Her greatest achievement was being the fantastic grandmother and great-grandmother that she clearly was. She loved a dip of snuff and was sharp witted in her opinions. The Pine Bluff Commercial newspaper wrote a large article about her life, her four sets of twins were the focus due to the rarity of having so many twins within a large family. She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church for many decades. This small country Church was a refuge for her and her family as they gathered to sing "Gimme that old time Religion." ~ This Church has a cemetery adjacent to the grounds that have many Lunsford descendants interred there. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lunsford, he died March 1, 1987. At the time of her death, survivors include eight sons, Billy Gene Lunsford, Lonnie Lee Lunsford, Charlie Ray Lunsford, John L. Lunsford and Larry DeWayne Lunsford, all of Pine Bluff, William Henry Lunsford of Star City, Arkansas, Troy Dean Lunsford of Hardy and Havis Adell Lunsford of Pickens, Arkansas; five daughters, Carolyn Sue Leopard and Martha Nell Nicholson, both of White Hall, Maxine Ward of Sheridan, Pauline Lunsford of Pine Bluff and Dorothy Matkin of Fordyce; 44 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She upon going to be with her Lord and Master, left many many friends, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a multitude of mourners that still think of her often and miss her smile and conversation. Her Funeral service was at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, a few miles easterly from Rison, Arkansas. Brother Farrell Breashers and long time family confidant Calvin Terry officiated the packed house service. Her nephews were pallbearers with interment in New Hope Cemetery by Buie Funeral Home of Rison handling all arrangements. ~~~~~ ~~~~~~ + ~~~~~ ~~~~~~
