Maudie May Dailey the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Dailey was born at Benton, Iowa, March 15 1889 and died March 12 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 26 days. she was next to the youngest of a family of eleven children. In 1904 she came to Nebraska with her parents and homesteaded in southwest Holt County. She married Herman DeGroff on April 20, 1914 at Burwell and they became the parents of 11 children, two dying in infancy. She was a true pioneer mother rearing a large family and enduring all the hardships of a pioneer home. They ranched and farmed in various places in Holt County and for a few years had a blacksmith shop in Amelia. They spent the las 32 years in the O'Neill vicinity, moving to town in 1945 where she spent her remaining years. In 1964 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. DeGroff fell and broke her hip in 1964, being in a wheel chair since. For the past three years she has lived at the Senior Citizen's Home in O'Neill. She was preceded in death by her husband who died in June, 1965; her parents, five brothers and two sisters. Surviving ar her sons, Bert of O'Neill, Gerald of Brewster, Jay of Elkhorn and Donald of Atkinson; daughters, Eleanor Senn of Ericson, Florence Kelley of Burwell, Doloros Warner, Burwell, Bessie Krutz of Orchard and Cleora Dierks of Versailles. Also surviving are thirty-eight grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren; her twin brother Claude Ray of Mitchell, South Dakota and sisters, Minnie Verley of Lincoln and Ida Lambert of Ewing.
