Stricken two weeks before, when a blood clot formed over her heart, she passed quietly away about 9 o'clock, Friday evening. Her death was somewhat unexpected, for though her condition had been critical several times in the past two weeks of her illness, she had each time rallied. In her ten years of residence here, Mrs. Casteel prepared thousands of meals, not only at the cafe the family operated, but also for club luncheons, parties and other functions. Capable, industrious, day after day, found her always on the job, working long hours, but even maintaining a cheerful outlook on life and solicitous of the welfare of her family and friends. Hundreds, including scores from Plainview, Randolph and neighboring towns, crowded into the Methodist church here Sunday afternoon to pay her a deserved and final tribute. the Rev. Minar A. Gerrard, the church pastor, officiated. Beautiful bouquets and sprays of flowers, among them one form Creighton businessmen, surrounded the bier. Pallbearers were six members of the Lions' Club, for which Mrs. Casteel had prepared luncheons, since it inception several years ago. Interment was made in the cemetery just north of Plainview. Maude P. Bernard was born in Cambria, Iowa, September 27, 1883 and passed from this life, July 16, 1937 at the age of 53 years, 9 months and 19 days. She came to Plainview, Nebr., December 13, 1883, where she grew to womanhood. On December 24, 1903 she was united in marriage to Frank Casteel of Randolph, Nebr. To this union five children were born. The family came to Creighton in 1927 and went into the restaurant business with a brother of Mr. Casteel, the late Charles Casteel. In July of the following year, they took over full control of the business. Mrs. Casteel was a member of the Creighton Methodist church for the past nine years. Among the many, who will miss her are: her husband, Frank; three daughters, Mabel Olive and Phyllis Floydelle of Creighton and Nellie Bernadine Schrader of Bloomfield: two sons, Merle LaMonte and James Allen of Creighton: one sister, Mabel Ulm of Randolph; four brothers, Ross and Guy Bernard of Kamuela, Hawaii; her aged mother, Mrs. Francis Bernard of Randolph; three grandchildren and numerous friends. ...The Creighton News 22 July 1937
