Maurice Nonnamaker Marshall was born Nov. 13, 1904, at his parents’ home, known as the Marshall Nursery, in rural Arlington, to George A. and Dora Marshall. He grew up in Arlington, and graduated from Arlington High School in 1922. He later graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he earned a business degree, and from Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in horticulture. He then became a salesman in his father’s nursery business in Arlington and Omaha. He moved to Denver, Colo., in 1941 and started the nursery there. Marshall Nurseries was a leading nursery in the Denver area for almost 30 years. In 1928, he married an Arlington High School classmate, Lida Larson. They were married for 35 years. After her death in 1963, he married Dorris Ellis in 1964; the couple was married for 34 years before she preceded him in death. Mr. Marshall was affiliated with the American Nurserymen’s Association; was a member of and served as president for both the Nebraska Nurserymen’s Association and Colorado Nurserymen’s Association; American Rose Society, where he was a consulting rosarian; served as the landscape architect for the Society of American Florists for the 1935 National Flower Show. He served on the board of the Denver Chamber of Commerce, and the board of the Colorado Crippled Children’s Society. He became a 32 Degree Mason while in college in Iowa, and remained active for many years. He became a life member of the Scottish Rite in Denver in 2006, and was a Mason for 81 years. He was a member of the Lions Club of Omaha before transferring his membership to the Denver Lions Club. He served on the Denver Lions Club Board and was made a life member in 1965. He was recognized for 60 years of membership in 1990, and was given the title of “Old Monarch”, in recognition of his 77 years as a Lion. Mr. Marshall designed the landscaping for such notable buildings as the Joslyn Memorial in Omaha; the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln; numerous city and town parks in Nebraska; and some of the landscaping at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sydney and Bill Winstrom of Omaha; step-daughters and spouses, Sue and Martin McCauley of Detroit, Mich., and Ann Capron of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Krause. Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Education Foundation or Crowell Memorial Home.
