Visitation at the Ellsworth Funeral Home. Maurine H. Leighton was born Nov. 2, 1924, at Lamberton, Minn., to Orlando and Bernice (Peterson) Leighton. She grew up on a farm near Rutland, and graduated from Rutland High School in 1942. She worked for a year in Detroit, Mich., before continuing her education. She graduated from Eastern State Normal School in Madison in 1945, with a commerce certificate. She taught at Willow Lake, Lake Preston and Hill School west of Oldham. She married Walter S. "Scotty" Stonefield on Dec. 31, 1949, at New Ulm, Minn. They farmed for 14 years, living on their farm until 1966, when they moved into Oldham. They retired from farming in 1987. She was a member of the Party-Lines Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary in Madison, and Oldham Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband, Scotty of Oldham; a son, Michael of Rapid City; three daughters, Mary (Dean) Johnson of Lake Poinsett, Nancy (James) Carmody of Ramona, and Susan Steiner of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ruth (Hart) Erickson of Arlington, Jean Ingemansen of Brookings, Beverly Leighton of Madison, Dolly (Bill) Uthe of Madison and LaVetta (Bob) Foster of Brookings; one brother, Donnie (Delores) Leighton of Madison; one sister-in-law, Sandy Leighton of Madison; and one brother-in-law, Richard Stonefield of Oldham. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Larry Leighton. Memorials may be directed to the Madison Hospice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.ellsworthfh.com.
