Max LeRoy Denton was born on December 6, 1948 in Creston, Iowa to Ralph Boyd Denton and Martha Izora (Smith) Denton. He was raised on a farm in Thayer with his four brothers. The family attended the Afton United Methodist Church. Max graduated from East Union High School in the class of 1967. After high school he served his country by enlisting in the Navy. After his service, he worked construction with his father-in-law and then became a brakeman for the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1968 he was united in marriage to Peggy Shiflett. This marriage was blessed with children Julie, Steven, and Scott. Peggy passed away in 1981. Max married Mary Cochran and together they raised their family Julie, Steven, Marty, Mitchell, Scott and Megan. They just recently celebrated 40 years of marriage in July surrounded by their family and friends! Max was proud of his family and loved the time spent with them, especially over a home cooked meal. He also kept close to his four brothers and their families. As a child, Max grew up with the Iowa State Fair, taking in all that the fair offered. He kept that tradition with his own family. He and the family enjoyed camping together, especially at the fair. He was a fan of vintage car shows, Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and not to mention rooting on Friday nights for the East Union Eagles football team! For those that knew Max, he was very sentimental and a kid at heart with a smile for everyone. We know he liked to have fun as he won the Miss Gorgeous Contest with freshly shaved chest and legs in the early 80's! His kids could never beat him at the game of Packman. In later years, Max was proud to be the first person hired to work at the Gummy Bear Factory in Creston. The company originated in Germany and was starting one of the first in the U.S. Max helped with the construction of the factory and the gentleman that hired him said he was impressed by his firm hand shake and handwritten resume. He spent the rest of his career at the Bunn-O-Matic Factory in Creston. He had a child like faith and while attending a Christian Men's Retreat, he recommitted his life accepting Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Max is survived by his wife Mary, children Julie Denton, Steven (Stacie) Denton, and Scott (Stephanie) Denton, Marty (Gabbie) Graham, Mitchell Graham, Megan Howell, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Peggy Shiflett Black, Pearl Cochran, Harold Cochran, and Baily Graham.
