Read More	The Nebraska Signal August 1993: Max Petrie West, son of Ingvar Petri West and Fannie Dasha Keller West, was born on November 9, 1912, in Omaha, and died at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont on August 9, 1993. He was 80 years and 9 months old. He had resided at Fairview Manor since November 1990, after suffering a severe stroke on July 7, 1990. He was the third child in a family of five. The family moved to Iowa soon after Max was born, and a short time later returned to Omaha. When Max was 11 years of age, they moved to a farm near Bradshaw. They farmed there for two years, and then moved again, this time to a farm southwest of McCool. He helped with the farming while his dad was away doing carpenter work. Later he worked in Iowa, western Nebraska and Washington State. Max and his brother Henry worked at at the construction of the Fairmont Air Base during WWII. When the Base was completed, Max went to Grand Island and did construction work there for the war effort. Max and his brother Henry founded the West Brothers Construction Co. and Retail Store in Fairmont in May 1947. Five years later, their brother, Walter, joined the company as the bookkeeper. This partnership continued until Henry's death in 1964. Max and Walt worked together until Walt passed away in 1979. Dwight West, Max's nephew, bought into the business, and later Don West, another nephew, joined them. Max retired about five years ago and continued to be interested in their work. Max was married to Verna Storm on June 7, 1941. To this union four children were born. Verna passed away in March of 1962. He married Ruby Taylor on November 17, 1967. Max and his brothers all loved music and played at community programs. Max enjoyed playing harmonica at the church, Fairview Manor and other places. He sang in the church choir for over 50 years. As a boy and young man, he played baseball and was usually the catcher. He also umpired as he grew older. He enjoyed all kinds of sports and attended most local games. He was a true Husker fan and went to their games as often as possible. He was a charter member of the Lion's Club. He was always interested and involved with school, community and church activities. He liked people and believed the best about people, unless they proved him wrong. He considered the hundreds of people who worked for West Brothers his friends as well as those they did work for. Talking could be considered as one of Max's hobbies. Optimistic, honest and usually even tempered could be used in describing him. To his family he was caring, devoted and loyal. When at all possible he attended school activities, ballgames, concerts and other activities of his children and grandchildren. His big generous heart loved them all. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Verna; son, Dick; parents, brothers, Henry and Walter; sister, Ruth Jenkins and grandson, Ryan Black. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Vicki; daughters, Mrs. Don (Connie) Niedt, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Stoldorf; step-sons and step daughters-in-law, James and Alane Patterson, Lonnie and Deb Taylor; step-daughters, Juanita Rice, Mrs. Ray (Deanna Clare) Black; sister, Mrs. Jim (Margaret) Hatra; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 12, with the Rev. Tony Woodward officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied the Fairmont Community Church choir who sang several selections and the congregational hymns. Casket bearers were Ray and Russell Black, Danny Kahler, Mike Murray, Danny Patterson, and Donald West. Honorary casket bearers were Jessie Kaufman, Mark Murray, Brandon Patterson, Doug West and Dwight West. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery. ----------------------------------------.
