Description	:	Walter Leo West was born to Ingvard West and Fannie D. Keller West on December 24, 1919, at Persia, Iowa. He passed away on January 17, 1979, at his home in Fairmont, at the age of 59 years and 24 days. Walt was one of five children in his family. Keller West on December 24, 1919, at Persia, Iowa. He passed away on January 17, 1979, at his home in Fairmont, at the age of 59 years and 24 days. Walt was one of five children in his family. He was educated in the Fairmont area, attending elementary at District 1 and graduating from Fairmont high school. Following high school, he attended Boyles Business college in Omaha. For eight years Walt was employed in a lumber camp in the state of Washington. He was married to Evelyn Garrett of Fairmont on November 16, 1944, in Pot Angeles, Wash. Their two sous, Doug and Dwight, were born to them while living in Washington. In 1952 Walt and his family moved back to Fairmont, where he and his brothers entered into a construction and retail business known as West Brothers. He remained active in that partnership until his death. Walt was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, Henry. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Fairmont; two sons, Doug and his wife, Sharon of Lincoln and Dwight, and his wife Karen, and children, Kendra and Ryan of Fairmont; a sister, Ruth (Mrs. Clifford) Jenkins of Lushton; a brother, Max West of Fairmont; a sister, Margaret (Mrs. James) Hatra of Waco; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Walt will be remembered as one who enjoyed people. He was well-known for his community involvement, especially as an announcer at athletic and community events. He served as city clerk and mayor of Fairmont, as well as holding offices in the Chamber of Commerce. Walt was a charter member and past officer of the Fairmont Lion's club. Walt loved sports, music and his community. He took special pride and received enjoyment in the last few years in his grandchildren. His willingness to be friend, his patience, and his enthusiasm for community and sports events will be missed. Services were held in the Fairmont Community church on January 19, 1979, with the Rev. Jay Vetter officiating. Organist was Nancy Jo Galusha. Vocalists were Marvin and Delores Swartz and Marvin and Delores Roper. Pallbearers were Louis McCreath, Larry Neiman, Harold Smith Jr., Dale Thole, Del Thole and Harvey Thole. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery.
