Werling, Tipton, and Green Valley, Ariz., died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at University Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz., of complications from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Born Oct. 3, 1923, in Rochester, Iowa, to Charles and Genevieve (McSwiggin) Werling, Max spent most of his life in Tipton. He graduated from Tipton High school in 1941, attended Tipton Junior College and the University of Iowa until 1943 when he enlisted in the Navy. He served on a destroyer tender in the South Pacific. He returned to the University of Iowa on the G.I. bill, received his B.A. in 1948 and his J.D. in 1950. Max began practicing law in Tipton in 1950. He married Jeanne Cone on June 17, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa. He practiced law until 1972 and served as a Cedar County Attorney from 1956 to 1972 when he was appointed to the District Court bench. Max served as a judge for the Seventh Judicial District of Iowa until 1992 when he began serving as a Senior Judge. He retired in the fall 2001. Max was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Tipton. He was a 50-year member of the Iowa State Bar Association, a member of the Cedar County Bar Association, the Iowa Judges' Association, past president of the Iowa County Attorneys' Association and past president of the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Max also was a member of the Tipton Country Club, the Country Club of Green Valley, the I-Club, Elks, Moose Lodge, Masonic Lodge 11, VFW Post 2537 and American Legion Post 123 and a former member of the Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Warren, and a nephew. A scholarship fund for a Tipton High School graduate attending the University of Iowa is being established in his memory. Quad City Times: April 18, 2002 Memorial services for Max Werling, 78, are 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Church of Christ, Tipton. Burial will be at Tipton Masonic Cemetery.
