MULLINS - Herbert Baker Sr., 76, husband of the late Thelma Rebecca Bruce Baker, died Monday night in a local hospital after a long illness. Born in Marion County, he was a son of the late John Eli and Elwood Davis Baker, and the adopted son of Neil A. and Eunice Baker McMillan. He was associated with Meares Hardware and Mortuary for 25 years. He served on the administrative board of Macedonia United Methodist Church, and was former fire chief of Mullins Fire Department where he served for 50 years. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion. Surviving are a son, Herbert Baker Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. William H. (Betty) Cooper; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Hall, Mrs. L. M. Austin Sr. of Winter Garden, Fla., Mrs. John W. Hicks of Greenville and Mrs. J. D. Joyner of Marion; and six grandchildren. Published in the Morning News, January 1974
