She was born October 12, 1928 in Wabash, Indiana to James William "Bill" and Hazel Jane (Garrison) Vandegrift. Maxine was a 1946 graduate of Linlawn High School. She was born October 12, 1928 in Wabash, Indiana to James William "Bill" and Hazel Jane (Garrison) Vandegrift. Maxine was a 1946 graduate of Linlawn High School. She married Joseph Lee Howard in Wabash on October 15, 1948. Maxine retired from the Purdue Co-op Wabash County Extension Service after 35 years. She was a member of the Wabash Friends Church, where she served in the nursery, the Jolly Janes Home Economics Club, and the Wabash County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed working with her flowers and gardening. Maxine also loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all her 4-H children. She volunteered with the Stockdale Mill Association in Roann, and at Helping Hands. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lee Howard of Roann; two children, Becky (Kendall) Pitts of North Manchester, Indiana, and Michael T. (Tammy) Howard of Urbana, IN; sister, Janice Vandegrift, and adopted sister, Rita Smith, both of LaFontaine; 9 grandchildren, Chad (Lea) Howard, and Caton (Nicole) Howard, both of Urbana, Cale (Paige) Howard of Gas City, IN, Cameron Howard of Urbana, Chris (Lora) Cartwright of Andrews, Indiana, Adam (Angie) Cartwright of Roann, Seth (Tiffany) Cartwright of Anderson, Indiana, J.P. (Dana) Pitts of North Manchester, and Tim Pitts of Fort Wayne, Indiana; great grandchildren, Cash Cartwright, Alexandra Cartwright, Kassidy Cartwright, Presley Cartwright, Brodie Howard, Fisher Howard, Chase Howard, Maya Howard, Ashton Keesling, Ethan Miller and Brady Miller. Funeral services will be held at Wabash Friends Church, 3563 S. St Rd 13, Wabash on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with David Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave. Wabash, and one hour prior to services at the church. Preferred memorial is Wabash County Fair Building Fund or Wabash Friends Church. The memorial guest book for Maxine may be signed at www.grandstaff-hentgen.com.
