She was born in Huron, South Dakota to Earvin and Mae Bates on April 28, 1924. She had five sisters and a brother. Read More	Rapid City/Maxine Mae Broer Maxine Mae Broer, "Auntie Max", 91, went to be with her beloved Charles on October 23, 2015. She was born in Huron, South Dakota to Earvin and Mae Bates on April 28, 1924. She had five sisters and a brother. As a teen, she traveled to California and spent over a year working for Bell Telephone Co. before returning to Huron. On January 9, 1946, Maxine married her sweetheart, Charles P. Broer. They built a home in Huron and had a daughter, Susan, in 1959. The couple moved to the Meadowbrook Golf Course area of Rapid City in 1969. After the Rapid City flood in 1972, the family relocated to a new home on Hwy 44 west near Johnson Siding. They lived there until 2001, when the couple moved to Alps Park Apartments in west Rapid City. In January of 2015, health issues warranted moving to Golden Living Center, Prairie Hills, in Rapid City. Charles passed in June and Maxine couldn't go on without her husband of 69 years. Maxine worked in the cafeteria for the SD Public School System for many years. Maxine was an avid seamstress. She sewed dozens of garments for herself and others over the years. She enjoyed a variety of crafting mediums and liked to bake. Chuck and Maxine grew large, productive gardens and had beautiful flower beds. They were campers with Good Sam Club for many years. They participated in Black Hills Dance Club for many years. They loved to travel and took many vacations around the United States. Maxine always had a sharp wit and loved to clown around and make others laugh. She adored and cherished her beloved daughter, Sue. Maxine is survived by her daughter and her husband;2 grandsons; 2 great grandchildren; 3 sisters; 3 very special nieces; special nephew; and special family friend and caregiver, "S.D". She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; sisters, Helen Sammons, Janice Wenker; and brother, Jerry Bates. Services are set for 10:00am Tues., Oct. 27 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Robert Savot officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before services. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 11:30am on Tuesday. A memorial has been established to Canyon Lake Activity Center.
