May Evans Smith Harper passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Harmony House Health Care Center. She was born September 3, 1910, in a 40 year old log cabin at Blaine, WA to parents, William and Nettie (Holt) Evans. Her family moved to Schrag when May was four years old and her first year of school was there. In 1917, her parents homesteaded on the Colville Indian Reservation, in the Duley Lake area. She attended grade school at Long Lake and Duley Lake schools. She received her high school education in Seattle and graduated from Roosevelt High School. May Evans and Sam C. Smith were married December 23, 1929, and together, they ranched in the Monse area, raising cattle and grain. Their son, Dave S. Smith, was born November 4, 1935. After Sam's death, May spent winters in Quartzsite, AZ, where she met Warren Harper from Paul, ID. They married and spent winters at Quartzsite until his death. May was a member of Brewster Grange, Brewster Bridle Club, Monse School Board and the Okanogan County Cowbelles. Survivors include granddaughter, Julie Hensley (Kurt); grandson, Dale Smith (Renee); great-grandchildren, Jade, Davey, Chandler and Cade; daughters-in-law, Janet Smith and Edna Palmer (Tom) and family; and many special nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her son, Dave S. Smith; grandson, Dave P. Smith; her parents; brothers, Bert Howard and Tom Evans; sister, Margaret Greene; and special nephew, Bill Evans. A Tribute Service will be held Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Okanogan Cemetery in Monse, WA. In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials may be made to Northwest Kidney Foundation, The Seeing Eye, or a charity of choice. Barnes Chapel, Brewster, is entrusted with the arrangements.
