May Irene Dirks, 89, of Anamosa, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at the Anamosa Care Center, following an extended illness. Surviving are three sons, Keith (Joyce) of Amber, Phillip (Kathy) of Anamosa, Harvey (Kathleen) of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Coral Jackson and Lynette (David) Scott, both of Reno, Nev., Gayle (Tony) Valdez of Gilroy, Calif.; a sister, Phyllis Richardson of Sunny Bank, Australia; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands and a brother. May Irene Baker was born Dec. 4, 1913 in Birmingham, England, the daughter of William H. and Winifred Garratt Baker. May immigrated to Brisbane, Australia with her family at a young age. She married William Stansfield, who was later killed in a naval battle in the Coral Sea, during WWII. May married George Dietrich Dirks in 1944 in Brisbane, Australia. Following the war, the couple moved to Downers Grove, IL. They later moved to Amber, Iowa, in 1962. The family moved to Australia for six months, but returned to Amber again. May became a naturalized citizen of the United States of American in 1965. May was employed at Georgia-Pacific in Monticello until she retired. George preceded her in death in 1974. In 1979, May moved to San Jose, Calif. In 2000, she moved to Reno, NV., and on May 6, 2003 she came back to live in Anamosa. May was a member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church and the Amberettes No Gravestone Found
