Victim Was Pioneer Teacher Miss May Rudd, 68 year old Miller resident died early Saturday evening, as the result of burns received when the interior of her one-room house was completely destroyed by fire, Saturday morning. Miss Rudd was trapped in the house when a kerosene stove exploded, showering her with blazing oil. When she managed to reach the door, her clothing was all ablaze. A neighbor, Mrs. Louis Eaton, hearing her screams, rushed over and tore her burning clothing from her body, and she was immediately taken to the hospital. Miss Rudd suffered third degree burns on her back and limbs. While cause of the fire is not definitely known, it was conjuctered by firemen that Miss Rudd had been filling the tank while the stove was lighted. A fuel can near the stove had the bottom blown out of it. When firemen reached the building, the fire was burning fiercely, and dense smoke made it difficult, for a time to enter the building. Packed suitcases indicated that Miss Rudd was preparing for her departure to Wallace, where she had contracted to teach. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Methodist church, and burial was made in the GAR cemetery. Immediate survivors are a brother, H.G. Rudd of Redfield and a sister, Cora Rudd of Manitoba, Canada. Born in Marlette, Mich. The deceased came with her parents to Spring Lake township in 1884, as a child. The family later moved to Miller, and after her mother's death, Miss Rudd and her father the late G.W. Rudd, made their home together, until his death. A graduate of the University of South Dakota, she followed the teaching profession for some years, retiring for a time, and later re-entering the profession.
