The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, February 1, 1990 ===================== May Pearl Hall, only child of Edward E. and Isabelle (Hammond) Eno, was born November 4, 1893. Her parents had homesteaded in Oklahoma and were returning two uncles, who had died to typhoid, to Nelson, Nebraska, for burial. In route, May Pearl was born on the prairie in Kansas. Her mother died on the journey, and she was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hammond. She attended Nelson Schools and Nelson High School. She was united in marriage to Warren C. Hall in the home of her grandparents on November 20, 1913. Their honeymoon was in Fairfield, at the home of a sister and brother-in-law of Warren. It is reported several car loads of Nelson folk went to Fairfield to shivaree the newlyweds. What the folks had not figured on was rain that made the roads impassable resulting in them having to stay in Fairfield overnight. Four children were born into the Hall household. One child, a boy, died in infancy, and three daughters. When the County Clerk's position opened in 1916, Mrs. Hall suggested her husband run for the position. He was elected for a two-year term. After completing his public service in 1922, the family decided to head west to visit Pearl's father, who had moved to Red Mesa near Durango, Colorado. Once that far west and nothing pressing them to return, they headed to California where Mr. Hall worked for a year as a night checking clerk at a bakery. The family returned to Nelson in the summer of 1924, where they spent the rest of their lives. They were involved in the implement and car business for many years. During their years together they traveled to Canada, Old Mexico and Panama, as well as to 47 of the 50 states. They spent 74 years together in marriage. She was an active member of the Nelson Methodist Church, of which she was a member for 78 years, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #27 in Nelson, Federated Women's Club, Bide-A-Wee Club, and had served on the Library Board for 39 years. She enjoyed gardening and tending her flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Warren C. on April 2, 1988; an infant son; a daughter, June Burch in 1972; and two granddaughters, Brenda and Tina Melvin. She is survived by her daughters, Irene Riggs and her husband Frank of Prescott, Arizona, and Carol Melvin and her husband Norland of Nelson, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a cousin, Bob Koontz of Edgar; other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 1, 1990, at 2:00 p.m. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Music was provided by Diane Collins, soloist, singing "In The Garden" and "A Perfect Day" with Melba Lynch as accompanist. Ivan Schafer was organist. Casketbearers were Steve Melvin, Barry Melvin, Duane Meyer, Don Burch, Ron Broers, and Cleo Doggett. Eastern Star services were by Order of Easter Star, Chapter No. 27 of Nelson, Nebraska.
