The death of Mrs. Soper came as a great surprise to the family and friends as she had been up and in her apparent usual health until Thursday night when she was taken ill. She was hastened to Iowa sanitarium Friday morning, where an examination revealed that her condition was critical and she passed away Sunday morning. Death was due to an acute infection which had developed, according to the attending physician. She had submitted to a major surgical operation about two years ago but had apparently made recovery from that. Born a Chelsea, Iowa, September 23, 1889, Mayme V., the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Berka, she came to Nevada with the family as a small girl and this had since been her home. After attending the Nevada schools, she became an employee in the office of the Journal about 1907 and was employed in various capacities for a period of over twenty years, giving up this work in April 1928. During the major period of that time she was in the office in the capacity of bookkeeper. During her long employment on this newspaper she proved herself to be a faithful, loyal and painstaking employee and her niche in the history of the Evening Journal will be a long remembered one. She was married to Bernice M. Soper at Des Moines, Iowa, during the time that Mr. Soper was in the U. S. army and stationed at Camp Dodge. She continued her work in the Journal office and upon the return of her husband to Nevada after receiving his discharge from the service, they established a home. She leaves besides her husband and the niece, Betty Porter, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Berka, two sisters and three brothers. The sisters are Miss Louise Berka of Madison, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Betty Erickson of Nevada, while the brothers are Milo Berka, Jerry G. Berka and Harry Berka, all of Nevada. Two brothers and one sister are dead, they being Fred Berka who died at Colo. Louis Berka, world war veteran who died in Nevada and Lotta Porter, who died in Marshalltown.
