He was born at home in Windsor on October 9, 1924, a son of Edwin Burleigh Hewett and Ethel Josephine (Banks) Hewett. He attended school in Weeks Mills and graduated from Erskine Academy, South China, in the class of 1942. He married Gladys Bartlett in 1947 and they spent 67 years together, raising their five daughters. Maynard worked at several jobs, including carpentry, before becoming a millwright at Hudson Pulp and Paper (later known as Statler Tissue), Augusta, in 1952 and retired from there in 1986. Maynard loved making things and making things work. He built their first home in Weeks Mills, a cottage on Clary Lake, Jefferson, and a lovely fiber-glassed boat that the family enjoyed for years. In his younger days he loved to go hunting and spent many hours hunting deer, rabbits and birds. He also loved baseball!! He followed the local teams and rarely missed watching a Red Sox game. He looked forward each week to his visit with his life-long friend, Vaughn Pierce, and his Friday “chowder” lunch date with Carroll York. He was predeceased by his parents Edwin Hewett and Ethel Hewett Plaisted; his brothers Carroll Hewitt and Elwyn Hewett; his sister, Shirley Nichols; and great-granddaughter, Kalli Dumont. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gladys Hewett of Windsor, ME; five daughters: Marilyn Boyle and husband Gary of Weeks Mills, ME, Gloria Danley and husband Curtis of Casco, ME, Joyce Dumont and husband Peter of Oakland, ME, Gayle Pinkham and husband Cameron of Windsor, ME, and Brenda Davis of Florida; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A committal service will be at Chadwick Hill Cemetery, Route 32, South China, ME. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either: Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330, Windsor Rescue Service, or to a local baseball team.
