Bruneau, 95, of Cascade, a retired rancher and military veteran, died of natural causes Thursday, Aug. 25, at a Great Falls care facility. Medric is survived by his stepdaughter; his sister; two sisters-in-law; two nephews; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Medric was born Nov. 1, 1915, to Medric and Maria (Travis) Bruneau in Great Falls, the fourth of five children. The Bruneaus were an old-time family in the Cascade and Eden area. Medric lived on the family ranch in Eden until his father passed away in 1923. At that time, Medric moved to Cascade with his mother and family. He attended school in Cascade and graduated from Cascade High School in 1934. He then worked for the railroad with his brother George and also worked at the Cascade Service Station. In 1941, Medric enlisted in the Army-Air Force and served from 1942 until 1945 as a flight engineer, and crew chief with the 372n Bomb Squadron in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a master sergeant with decorations. Medric then spent a couple of years in California with his sister Mildred and then came back to Montana and worked for Earl Monroe on his ranch. Medric acquired the Hale place in Eden and moved there in 1956 to take up ranching. On Feb. 5, 1961, Medric married Frances (Rumney) Dear. They continued to ranch in Eden until 1980, when Medric sold the ranch to a neighbor, Gene Iverson, and he and Frances retired to Great Falls and later to Cascade. Medric served as president of the Montana Cowboys Association, was a member of Scottish Rite, Cascade Chapter No. 10-Order of the Eastern Star; Meridian Lodge 105, and Hood Mortag American Legion Post No. 133. Medric also served as a council member of the City of Cascade County 4-H Horse program and for years, donated a trophy belt buckle in memory of Carol Dear. Medric enjoyed attending the reunions of the 372nd Bomber Squadron, spending "some retirement winters" in Arizona, picnics at Parson's hunting cabin, special Christmases at the Rumney Ranch in Cut Bank, family reunions with his sisters, as well as the Easter Sunday oyster feeds at Kenny William's. Most of all, even though he never had children of his own, he enjoyed being known as "Grandpa Medric," "Uncle Medric," and even "Uncle Mavrick" to a host of "step" and otherwise acquired kids; he also jokingly was known to some as St. Medric because of being born on All Saints Day, Nov. 1. Medric was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances, in 2003; his stepdaughter Carol Dear; stepson Buck Dear; his brother George; sisters Isabel Munroe and Mildred Turner; a nephew, Donald Munroe; and a special lady he always called his "other daughter" – Karen Windecker.
