The dead were Mrs. Helen E. Corbin, 42, of Puyallup, a student pilot; Mylo A. Trueblood, 35, of Tacoma, her instructor; Edward A. Opp, 48, owner and pilot of the second plane and Melbourne Holbrook, 43, both of Sumner. Opp formerly lived in Anchorage, Alaska. Mrs. Corbin and Trueblood were in a two-place Cessna 150. Opp was flying a four-place Cessna 172 with Holbrook as a passenger. Witnesses said one of the planes was headed for a straight-in south approach to the runway and the other was turning south from a westward landing pattern when they collided about 300 feet in the air. The Opp plane nosedived into the backyard of a nearby home, killing Opp and Holbrook instantly. The smaller one crashed in the same area and burst into flames. Trueblood was dead when pulled from the wreckage, and Mrs. Corbin died en route to a hospital. Thun Field, one of the busiest light plane airports in the Seattle-Tacoma area, has no control tower or facilities for ground control of air traffic. Mr. Opp was the son of Frank Opp, 944 South Main, Kalispell, and Mrs. Esther Opp, Lakeside. He was a graduate of Flathead High School and attended Washington State University. His widow is the former June Armstrong, also of Kalispell. He is also survived by a son, Roger Edward, 10. Funeral arrangements are pending.
