After Melissa divorced Henry Luick, she was remarried to John Arnold, a widower and 12 years older than she, who had children of his own: Eugene, Kansas and Ida. They had a daughter together, Eva Arnold, in 1870. They moved to Porterville, Tulare, California in the spring of 1876, taking Eva and two of Melissa's sons - Charles and Louis - with them. John was a farmer. Melissa had two brothers - Howard and Adam - in the same area at that time who were ranchers. Howard left Michigan for San Francisco in 1851 to mine for gold but was not successful and returned home. In 1856 Howard and his wife, Deborah, returned to California and purchased 300 acres south of Niles where they ranched. Adam, one of the original settlers of Belmond, traded his Iowa farm for 500 head of sheep in northern California in 1854 and purchased 320 acres near Livermore, California in 1866 where he engaged in ranching. The 1880 census for Township 8 (Porterville), Tulare, California, shows John, 66, a farmer born in New York and Melissa, age 54, keeping house, born in Ohio. The census shows her son, age 19, as a farmer and living with them, along with their daughter, Eva, age 10. The census also shows brothers Charles and Louis living in Kern County, California and not in Tulare County. Melissa's probate case was filed in the estate division of the Superior Court of Tulare County, California on 11 Dec 1883. She married (1) Henry Jacob Luick Jr 26 Oct 1843 in Sharon Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan. She married (2) John Arnold 2 Nov 1868 in Wright County, Iowa.
