Description	:	As a child, Melva lived on a farm between Sutton and Grafton. She worked hard on the farm. "I hauled bales of hay, milked cows twice a day, and helped our neighbors pick corn off the ground. I also helped the neighbors butcher chickens." She belonged to 4-H. "I hauled bales of hay, milked cows twice a day, and helped our neighbors pick corn off the ground. I also helped the neighbors butcher chickens." She belonged to 4-H. She had a cow that she showed at the County Fair. She also entered sewing projects and items she cooked. "I went with my grandparents, Fred and Bertha Peter, every summer to Goodland, Kansas. We would help Aunt Hanna at the refreshment stand for a week during the fair. I did dishes and helped customers. I got my first two stuffed animals while working at the carnival. One of the carnival guys gave me a panda, as a thank you for serving coffee to him every day. The other one, a seal, my grandpa Fred got for me. They were having a raffle and some of the numbers called were not claimed, so they threw prizes into the crowd. Grandpa caught the seal and gave it to me." Melva stayed with her great-grandma Eva (Roth) Peter for a while when she was attending high school. "I met Gerald while I was staying at the Sutton Hotel. I was helping the neighbors that lived by our farm. They were living at the hotel. Then I went to live at my Grandpa and Grandma Griess' house. I worked at Ted's Cafe on the highway. I was a waitress. Gerald ate lunch there every day." Melva had a milkshake waiting for him every day at lunch. She loved to camp and fish. She didn't bait her hook often or take the fish off the hook. I think it was her way of making dad do it for her. She loved to sit on the bank of a lake and look out over the water. She loved word search and crossword puzzles, games and playing cards. One of her favorite past times was putting large puzzles together. She was kind and thoughtful and she really did have a great sense of humor and loved to tease and make people laugh.
