She attended Glasco schools and graduated from Glasco High School in the Class of 1922. She taught one year in a rural school and married Sidney Martin on August 15, 1923. She attended Glasco schools and graduated from Glasco High School in the Class of 1922. She taught one year in a rural school and married Sidney Martin on August 15, 1923. They were together over sixty-five years before Sidney's death on January 9, 1989. In May of 1990, Melva had a crippling stroke and spent the final ten years of her life in the loving care of the staff at Nicol Home. Her concerns for the safety and well-being of all the residents of the Home earned her the honorary title of Housemother and a badge she wore proudly every day. She died at the Home on July 30, 2000 at the age of 96. Melva is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Pauline and Carl Johnson; four grandchildren Karen Johnson, Mary Lou Clark and husband Lee, James Johnson, Michael Johnson and wife Suzanne; seven great grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Vera Ruth. Melva was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Church at an early age and lived all her life by those principles. She was a loyal wife and mother and a loving friend to many. ---
