Description	:	Mr. Melvin "Charlie" Van Schepen, age 85, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at the Sanford Senior Care Center in Sheldon. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, April 16, at 1:30pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Paul Hansen will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Read More	Mr. Melvin "Charlie" Van Schepen, age 85, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at the Sanford Senior Care Center in Sheldon. Melvin Abram was born on July 31, 1925, in rural Boyden, the son of Chris and Johanna (Wynia) Van Schepen. He was raised in the Boyden-Hull area, where he attended the Boyden Christian School. From March 28, 1944, to February 7, 1946, he served in the United States Army during World War II. On April 22, 1948, he married Viola Maxine Ten Haken in Hull. They made their home in Hull, where he first operated a baler and a grinder. He then partnered with Duane Koele in VanKo Oil in Hull. Later the business changed to Van Schepen Oil, where he worked with his sons. In 1991, he semi-retired. "Vi" passed away on October 2, 2009, in Sioux Center, after more than 61 years of marriage. "Charlie" then entered the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. After a short time, he moved to the Sanford Senior Care Center. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder and was a member of the Bereans. He also served on the board of directors of the Western Christian High School in Hull. In addition, he belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull, participating in firing squads for many years. Mr. Van Schepen thoroughly enjoyed working at his service station, especially with his sons. After retirement, he also enjoyed working with his sons at the truck shed in the Hull Industrial Park. He looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include a son and his wife, Eldon and Lisa Van Schepen, and a daughter-in-law, Arlene Van Schepen, all of Hull; five grandchildren and their spouses, Sherri and Erik Oostenink, of Des Moines; Joel Van Schepen, of Raymore, Missouri; Nicole and Brian Rozeboom, of Hull; Michael and Amanda Van Schepen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Nicholas and Katie Van Schepen, of Hull; eight great-grandchildren, Shannon and Kendra Oostenink; Tyler, Jordan, and Emily Van Schepen; Sawyer and Addison Rozeboom; and Hunter Van Schepen; a brother-in-law and his wife, Vernon and Antoinette Ten Haken, of Sheldon; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Darlene and Lloyd Woelber, of Hull. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Van Schepen; four brothers, Clarence, Donald, Fred, and Louis Van Schepen; and a sister, Suzanna Vande Weerd.
