Description	:	Melvin August Fryrear was born August 23, 1909 in Clatonia, NE to Lydia Struckmeyer Fryrear and Charles Fryrear. Melvin was the second of four sons and he began his schooling near Clatonia.In March, 1918 the Fryrear family moved all its possessions by train to the newly purchase d family farm south of Paoli. Melvin and his brothers continued their schooling in the Highland Center-McKelvey area. After school, Melvin and his brothers helped on the family farm. Melvin was the second of four sons and he began his schooling near Clatonia.In March, 1918 the Fryrear family moved all its possessions by train to the newly purchase d family farm south of Paoli. Melvin and his brothers continued their schooling in the Highland Center-McKelvey area. After school, Melvin and his brothers helped on the family farm. However, Melvin used every free moment to play baseball on the Wages and Paoli teams. This passion for baseball continued into later life - a passion shared by his sweetheart Mary Thompson whom he married June 4, 1931. They began farming in the Wages area and established the family home in the Highland Center area. Following a successful corn crop they began their family of Helen Lou, Barbara JoDell and Richard Dale. Melvin was active in the community serving n the Highland Center, Phillips County and Haxtun school boards. He also served on numerous other boards. He particularly enjoyed his membership in the Mason and Eastern Star organizations. As their family grew, Melvin and Mary enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their various activities. On retirement in 1977 they moved to Haxtun. A feature of the Haxtun home which appealed to Melvin was a card room in the garage where many games of pitch were later enjoyed.As Mary's health waned, Melvin lovingly cared for her needs until it became necessary for her to enter the nursing home where he continued his daily visits until her death on July 10, 1992.Melvin maintained an active life with visits to the countryside and socializing at various cafes and was able to continue living at home despite mounting health problems. He entered the Haxtun nursing hom in December, 1995. Melvin died June 24, 1997.He is survived by daughters Helen Lou and husband Darrell Lambert of Fleming, Barbara Saylor of Sterling, son Richard and wife Diane of Haxtun; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; brothers Bill and wife Marjorie, Merle and wife Joall of Holyoke; sister-in-law Cleo of Tuscon, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by wife Mary, two infant children and brother Bud.Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Haxtun on June 26, at 2 p.m. Rev Thomas Cross was officiating.
