Description	:	Melvin Dale Schwisow passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2016, in Yakima, Washington. Mel was born the eldest child of Edwin and Grace Boicourt Schwisow on April 25, 1924, in White River, South Dakota. Mel spent his early years in Belvedere, South Dakota. Read More	Melvin Dale Schwisow passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2016, in Yakima, Washington. Mel was born the eldest child of Edwin and Grace Boicourt Schwisow on April 25, 1924, in White River, South Dakota. Mel spent his early years in Belvedere, South Dakota. In 1934, to escape the Midwestern drought and dustbowl, the family moved to White Bluffs, Washington, to join other family members who had settled there. A year later the family moved to Sunnyside, Washington, so that Mel and his siblings could attend Adventist school with family members who had located there. Mel graduated from Yakima Valley Academy, in Granger, Washington, in 1941. Following graduation he spent a year at Walla Walla College, in College Place, Washington, specializing in accounting classes. In 1942, Mel married Verona “Nonie” Ward. They settled into a home on the Sunnyside-Mabton Highway where they raised their five children and enjoyed living in the country. Mel began working at Anderson Motor Company in Grandview, Washington, in 1947, where he developed a passion for hard work, cars and the car business. Mel spent the next 59 years at Andersons as their accountant and manager, retiring in 2006. Most of his life, Mel’s day began with a walk to retrieve the newspaper from the “box” so that he could settle in and check out what was going on locally and around the world. He loved gardening—taking special pride in planting, harvesting and sharing his marvelous tomatoes, corn, squash, raspberries, roses and dahlias. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed watching and listening to the birds. After Verona passed away in 1994, Mel married Phyllis and embraced her three children. They spent the years until his passing working, traveling, taking in beautiful scenery, visiting family and friends far and wide, and checking out car shows. Mel loved taking his guitar along and could be seen sitting on a bank here or there or at a picnic table strumming his guitar and singing along. In 2009, they relocated to Selah, his residence until his passing. Mel continued his love for music and his guitar throughout his life. As a lifetime member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he often led out in music. The past six years Mel played guitar in the instrumental group, “The King’s Strings”, and enjoyed practicing and performing at churches and assisted living facilities. Mel was predeceased by a sister, Thelma, and a brother, Dr. Don Schwisow. He is survived by brother Vern (Twyla) Schwisow of Chehalis, Washington, and brother Norman (Sharon Kirkpatrick) Schwisow, of Portland, Oregon, and sister Wanda Sheppard, of West Seattle, Washington. Mel is survived by children Gaelynn (Jerry) Cecil, of Yakima; Charlene (Darrel) Ellis, of Cle Elum; Bernie (Jan) Schwisow, of Sunnyside; and Bob (Gloria) Schwisow, of Grandview; Tracey (Doug) Hay, of Yakima; and Roxanne McDonald, of Springfield, Oregon; Anthony Schwisow, of Newberg, Oregon; and Carmen Schwisow, of Portland, Oregon. Mel spent his lifetime teaching patience as a virtue and aspiring to demonstrate his belief that people should be principled but open-minded. He will be greatly missed by many including cousins and in-laws and friends as well as his grandchildren Rachelle Ellis, Jennifer (Will Bow) Ellis, Andrea (Ryan) Sangrey, Jason (Crystal) Schwisow, Mekenna (Arnold Franada) Schwisow, Jessica (Thomas) Pressley, Jessie Rasmussen, Jerry (Barbara) Cecil, James (Zona) Cecil, Matthew McDonald, Tabitha Tucker and Lisa Holeton, He is also survived by great-grandchildren Abe, Yve, Isaiah, Miles, Imogen, Caitlin, Josie, Emma, Chase, Gage, Izabella, Adelinn, Khaylie, Braiden and Wyatt, and a host of others to whom Mel was “Grandpa,” including Kashawna Foster, and the Lascu and Noagi families.
