First of all, it has been difficult to think what to write because of something that is rather embarrassing to mention. I will write more later. --------------------------------------------------------- Note: I wrote something personal about Jeannie (his wife and mother of his great 6 children) when she died, so I want to write something personal about Melvin. First of all, it has been difficult to think what to write because of something that is rather embarrassing to mention. The family know that my hearing wasn't normal, but they never treated me less than like anybody else because of it. Sadly, it did have its downside. Melvin was very soft spoken (literally). Don't mistake soft for weak; it was just harder to hear him because of the nature of his voice and my hearing. My grandma was hard of hearing and from her I learned to simply smile and pretend you heard so that you wouldn't be seen as stupid for continually asking someone to repeat themselves. So my regret was not hearing him many times. I wanted to listen, it was just very hard at times to hear him. Nevertheless, there is no doubt as to his actions. This man was dedicated to his family. Melvin saw that the Thompson's always had a roof over their heads, money for food on the table, and clothes on their back. I don't ever recall him even wanting a break from his family responsibilities as his family was his life. Jeannie was great at always having a place in her home for other children, and Melvin didn't mind. Years later I wondered if I was somewhat rude to Melvin when I was a child because I always referred to them as Melvin and Mrs. Thompson -- because she always referred to him as Melvin. I then realize it was probably a great complement a man could have because HE made her Mrs Thompson, not only by putting a ring on her finger and helping raise six kids, but because he supported them all in every since of the word. The surname Thompson is special to me -- despite the fact that it doesn't appear on my own family tree. Rather because it reminds me of what it means to be a neighbor, friend, and an example of what fatherhood and motherhood (in the case of Jeannie) should mean. Melvin didn't make his mark here by having a job that made him rich, famous or powerful. Rather, we sometimes forget that the greatest achievement for a man isn't measured in the size of his wallet but in the dedication in the hearts of those who saw him as their father, mentor and head patriarch of the Thompson clan. He was born to be a father, and that what he became, and that is how he left this life... ======================================================== The following obituary was on the funeral home's website: "Melvin Darrell Thompson, 84, passed away Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater, KS. Born April 12, 1932, in Protection, KS, he was the son of Edson Aubrey and Leta Hazel (Cline) Thompson. Melvin was a longtime resident of Coldwater, KS, previously living in Plains, KS, Mullinville, KS, and Protection, KS. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1953-1954. He enjoyed camping, horses, rodeos, and riding lawnmowers. He worked for many years as a mechanic for Northern Natural Gas Company. On August 30, 1955, he married Mary Jean Williams in Clayton, NM. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2015. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Elmer Thompson and Alfred Thompson; three sisters: Marguerite Hughes, Alma Favreau, and Geneva Smith; one grandson: Jeremey Caldwell; one granddaughter: Mandy Rush; and one great-grandson: Aiden Thompson. He is survived by six children: Floydene “Sister” Little (Ray) Melvina Caldwell (Dave), Jody Thompson (Anita), Mitch Thompson (Maggie) Eldon “Duke” Thompson (Ken), David Thompson; three sisters: Wanda Waller, Janice Trebino, Joyce Vann; twelve grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and Murphy the cat."
