Gates was born near Freedom, Michigan, May 24, 1857, and passed away at his home in Fairfield, Nebraska, Friday night, July 26, 1940, at the age of 83 years, two months and two days. Mr. and Mrs. Gates were pioneer settlers in Clay County. After their marriage, December 18, 1878, they lived in the Freedom and Burr Oak neighborhood in Michigan until they came to Fairfield, Nebraska, in 1883. For almost the entire time since then, Mr. Gates has been in the grocery or dry goods business in Fairfield. Some fifty years ago he and his brother-in-law, Dwight Murdock, operated the Murdock and Gates store in Fairfield. About twenty-five years ago Mr. Gates was manager of a grocery store in Deweese. For a number of years, until forced to retire by failing health a few months ago he had a grocery store in south Fairfield. Mr. Gates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Gates; three daughters, Mrs. Ben Brown (Inez), of Palmer, Nebraska; Mrs. Floyd Kunselman (Cecil) of Fairfield, Nebraska, and Mrs. John Jones (Catherine) of California; a sister, Mrs. Mary Murdock of Fairfield, Nebraska; three granddaughters, two grandsons, one great granddaughter, two nephews, other relatives and many friends. A sister, Mrs. Eva Bartholomew, of Fairfield, died in December, 1939, Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harris at the Methodist Church in Fairfield Sunday afternoon. He was assisted by Rev. Henry Case of Fairfield, who has been a friend of the Gates family for many years. Burial was made in the Fairfield Cemetery. Relatives from a distance, who came to attend the funeral of M. D. Gates in Fairfield were: Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brown and children, Adah, Benjamin and Buren of Palmer and Dr. and Mrs. V. H. Clark and daughter, Nadine, of Omaha.
