Sept. 3 - Despondent on account of sickness Melvin Curtis, a wealthy farmer of the Ripon section, killed himself this morning by shooting himself through the heart with a shotgun. Curtis had been suffering with stomach trouble for some time, and of late had become quite nervous and despondent. His physician had fears lest he would take his own life and informed members of the family to keep close watch on him. They concealed from him everything with which he might commit the deed. This morning at 8 o'clock however, a shotgun report was heard from the orchard. It was first presumed some one had been shooting pigeons, but investigation revealed the prostrate form of Curtis with a terrible wound in his breast. At his side was a single barrel shotgun. He had found a shotgun shell and the gun, and placing the muzzle against his left breast discharged it by touching the trigger with a stick. Death has been instantaneous. The deceased was worth fully $50,000. He had only recently constructed in the town of Ripon two stone business blocks, and in addition owned a farm of considerable value. The deceased was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a native of California, aged 53 years, and leaves a wife and a daughter. A brother, Charles Curtis of Murphys, and a number of other relatives in this city also survive him. The funeral will be held Sunday. The San Francisco Call - Sat., 4 Sept 1909 - Pg 9 Col 3
