Description	:	Melvin Eugene Ferdig, son of Fred and Lillie (Rozell) Ferdig, was born February 1, 1913, at Elk Point, S.D., and died Monday, April 11, 1988, in a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital at the age of 75. He had undergone surgery that day for injuries he received in an automobile accident the preceding Tuesday. Mr. Ferdig attended schools in Elk Point, S.D., but came to Missouri at an early age and took up farming. He was united in marriage to Miss Sede Merna Smith on January 1, 1940. Mr. Ferdig attended schools in Elk Point, S.D., but came to Missouri at an early age and took up farming. He was united in marriage to Miss Sede Merna Smith on January 1, 1940. To this union six sons and eight daughters were born: Marvin, Martin, Charles, Carl, Steven, Fred, Carol, Lillie, Merdell, Nancy, Patsy, Susan, Janet, and Sandra. Mr. and Mrs. Ferdig moved to a farm northwest of Lancaster and there they lived all of their married life. Mr. Ferdig was employed by International Harvester Company of Rock Island, Ill., for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died on Tuesday, April 7, 1988, in the automobile accident which injured him; and by his parents and one brother. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Marvin and Ruth Ferdig, Chillicothe, Ia., Martin and Linda Ferdig, Merdell and Richard Long, Susan Downing, and Janet and Jerry Chuites, all of Queen City, Charles and Debbie Ferdig, Glenwood, Carl and Carol Ferdig, and Fred and Michelle Ferdig, all of Lancaster, Steven Ferdig, Keokuk, Ia., Sandy and Ronnie Robinson, Blue Springs, Mo., Patsy and Mike Evans, Anamosa, Ia., Nancy and Donnie McCallum, Green Rock, Ill, Lillie Sherman, Lebanon, Mo., and Carol and George Nolan, Memphis, Mo.; 35 grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Milton Ferdig and Clifford Ferdig, Elk Point, S.D., Leslie Gardner, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Lloyd Gardner, Nederland, Tex.; three sisters, Dorothy Bryon and Lorraine Peterson, Elk Point, S.D., and Virginia Gardner, Akron, Ia.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many, many friends. Funeral services were held Friday, April 15, 1988, in Norman Funeral Chapel, Lancaster, with the Rev. James Ingersoll, Unionville, Mo., officiating. Organ selections were played by Maureen Watkins. Bearers were Max Shively, Avery Roberts, Randy Shively, Robert Anderson, Larry Reynolds, and Russell Simbro. Interment was in Arni Memorial Cemetery, Lancaster.
