Description	:	Mr. Gruber passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born November 9, 1916 on the family farm near Hope the son of Fred and Fannie (Utech) Gruber. He graduated from Hope High School and from Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture Education. Melvin farmed most of his life in the Hope area and served his country in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre, retiring from the United States Air Force Reserves. He was born November 9, 1916 on the family farm near Hope the son of Fred and Fannie (Utech) Gruber. He graduated from Hope High School and from Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture Education. Melvin farmed most of his life in the Hope area and served his country in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre, retiring from the United States Air Force Reserves. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek and served on various church committees, and was a member of the American Legion. On April 5, 1947 Melvin married Rose Marie Diepenbrock in Herington. She survives of the home. He is preceded in death by his sisters Marie Schlesener, Ruth Ebel, Rosalie Schimming, and his parents. Melvin's final resting place will be in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Hope. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour or to the St. John's Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek and may be sent in care of the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 206 N. Second Street, Hope, Kansas 67451.
