He attained the age of 82 years, five months and 12 days. Pallbearers included Todd and Kathy Steever, Terry Steever, Traci Steever and Bradley Stensaas, Amy and Wade Scheurenbrand, Cory Ludens, Abbay Johnson, and Becky and Nate Wunder. Melvin George Ludens was born at White, South Dakota on May 16, 1922, the son of Henry and Rose (Franken) Ludens. He moved to Lennox with his family and graduated from Lennox High School in 1941. He served in the US Army during World War 11, from Dec. 1, 1942 to Jan. 3, 1946. On June 2, 1946 he was united in marriage to Hermina Veenis in Canton. They lived in Lennox where he was employed at Farm Gas Co-op for 36 years. Shortly before he retired and after his retirement, he enjoyed helping his daughter and son-in-law with farming. His death ended a marriage of over 58 years. He also was a life member of Brethorst-Burma American Legion Post #174 in Lennox and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #628 in Sioux Falls. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ludens and a sister, Grace Andersen. On Jan. 12, 2004 Melvin had surgery for cancer, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. On Easter Sunday he suffered a stroke that left his left side paralyzed. On April 19 he entered the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Hermina; one son, Donald Ludens and his wife, Kit, of Tripp; one daughter, Diane Steever and her husband, Merlyn, of Chancellor; six grandchildren: Todd and Kathy Steever, Traci Steever, Terry Steever, Amy and Wade Scheurenbrand, Cory Ludens and Becky and Nate Wunder; two great-grandchildren; four brothers: Albert Ludens of Sioux Falls, Henry Ludens of Lennox, Matthew Ludens and Lowell Ludens of Rochelle, Illinois; two sisters: Cornelia Brink of Roswell, New Mexico and Rosetta Willer of Gilman, lowa; plus several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
