Description	:	Melvin Gerold Cross was born to James and Myrtle Cross on Oct. 20, 1922 in a sod house 3 miles east of Lamar, Ne. and departed this life March 25, 1978 in the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming., at the age of 55 years 5 months and 5 days. He lived with his folks in the Lamar community until 1930 at which time they moved to McCook, NE. After his parents separated he went to an orphans home in Lincoln, NE where he grew to manhood. Read More	Melvin Gerold Cross was born to James and Myrtle Cross on Oct. 20, 1922 in a sod house 3 miles east of Lamar, Ne. and departed this life March 25, 1978 in the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming., at the age of 55 years 5 months and 5 days. He lived with his folks in the Lamar community until 1930 at which time they moved to McCook, NE. After his parents separated he went to an orphans home in Lincoln, NE where he grew to manhood. In 1943 he was called to serve his country in the armed forces. In 1944 he was wounded in action in France and spent a long time in the hospital and then he went on to spend 20 years in Army Air Force with time spent in France, England and Japan. Then he was retired from the service in 1965. Melvin was a great lover of his fellow man and was especially fond of little children. He would have given his last penny to some child in need. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Myrtle Cross. He leaves to mourn his passing 3 brothers: Calvin Cross, Cheyenne, Wyoming., Alvin Cross, Lamar, NE, Marvin Cross, Wauneta, NE and 2 sisters: Mrs. Nellie Purdy, Boise, Idaho, and Mrs. Dorothy Fleming, Ogallala, NE; 6 nephews, 2 nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held Wednesday, March 29, 1978 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lamar United Methodist Church, Lamar, NE with the Rev. Melvin Koelling officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Myrl Cranwell, organist, Mrs. Larry White and Mrs. Wayne Lee. Selections were "Good Night and Good Morning" and "We are Going Down the Valley." Escorts were Ralph Shinn, Mark Berry, Ronny Berry, Myrl Cranwell, Jerry Verilek, Marvin Nelson, Fred Miller, and Ronnie Purdy. Interment was at the Wauneta Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Nebraska with Creveling Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
