Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service . Burial will be in the Colome cemetery. Melvin Joseph Cahoy, was born December 13, 1922 at Dallas, SD, to Joe M. and Anna (Lunn) Cahoy. He was baptized on March 9, 1923, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bonesteel, SD and was confirmed August 18, 1940 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Herrick, SD. Due to family moves, Melvin attended various elementary schools in Tripp and Gregory County. He went to high school in St. Charles, and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1941, after a bout with polio. After his father's death that same year, Melvin continued farming with his mother and sister Julia, as he ws deferred from military service. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Link in April of 1945. They lived on farms near Bonesteel and north of Dallas. In 1949 , they moved to a farm east of Colome which became their home for all of their life. Melvin thoroughly enjoyed farming – his love for the land and his cattle. He would whistle as he went about his daily chores and the distinctive tone of his whistle became familiar to all who worked with him over the years. Melvin served his community on the school board of the rural Saathoff and Stamer District #44 school; on the board of the Dallas, Colome and Winner Elevator; on the board of Elliston Township and served his church on the Zion Lutheran Church council and as a Sunday School teacher for several years. He was instrumental in the building of the new Zion Lutheran Church along Highway 18 in Colome as well as Colome's Rose Manor. Melvin died on Dec 18, 2010, 5 days past his 88th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Julia and her husband Howard Bates and many close relatives and friends. Surviving is his wife Elizabeth and daughter Shirley and her husband Robert T. Brownell of Rockerville, SD; a granddaughter Betsy Brownell and a grandson Robert J. (RJ) Grownell, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
