(Hickerson) Hakes on August 11, 1951, in Homer. ---Melvin attended Homer High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy from October 1942 until he was honorably discharged in February 1946. He was trained at Jim Miller's machine shop and retired from Eaton Corp. in Marshall, Michigan, in 1987. Hakes, 89, of Homer, Michigan, died Friday, July 25, 2014. ---He was born December 1, 1924, in Albion, Michigan, to William and Ethel Hakes. He married Betty A. (Hickerson) Hakes on August 11, 1951, in Homer. ---Melvin attended Homer High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy from October 1942 until he was honorably discharged in February 1946. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and sisters, Mildred, Linda, Pauline and Nancy. ---He is survived by his wife; brother, Paul; daughters, Dianna Porter (William) and Pamela Thomas; grandchildren, Julia (Kyle Wurtzel) Porter, Jennifer (Adam) Tilley, Jackie Porter, Dustin Thomas, Sarah Thomas and Natasha Summerfield; great-granddaughter, Linley; and several nieces and nephews. ---Visitation will take place at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel 303 South Hillsdale, Homer MI 49245 on Sunday July 27, 2014 from 3-5pm with family present to greet friends at that time. A memorial service will take place at on Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel at 11am with Reverend Timothy Marvil officiating. A luncheon will follow at the First Presbyterian Church of Homer. A private interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Memorial contributions are requested to the Kathy Hickerson-Mills Scholarship Fund . Assistance with memorials is available at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel, 303 South Hillsdale Street Homer.
