Read More	RALSTON, MELVIN LEE—Melvin Lee Ralston was born on February 8, 1898, in Hebron, the son of William Renwick Ralston and Ida Belle Turner Ralston. He died on January 20, 1986, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 87. Melvin graduated from Geneva High School, and served in the U. S. Navy during World War I. A talented musician, he was a member of the U.S. Naval Band, and fondly recalled having played first trombone under the baton of the great composer-conductor, John Phillip Sousa. Two very important things happened to Melvin Ralston not so long after his return from the Navy; he began his employment with the Geneva State Bank and he met-and married- Nina Alice Cook. A son, Richard Lee Ralston, was born March 5, 1933, and a daughter, Dorothy Ralston Batt of Madison, Wis., was born April 5, 1934. Dick Ralston preceded his father in death on August 1, 1985. Melvin Ralston became as much a part of the Geneva State Bank as its big vault, it seemed serving the institution for more than half a century and rising through the ranks to become its senior vice president. At about the age of 83, he figured it might be good to slow down a bit, so he went to a part-time status before retiring a couple of years later. Melvin Ralston was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church since 1933. A 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, he also held the Jordan Medal as the senior member of the Geneva Masonic Lodge-more than 60 years a Mason. In earlier years, he had played in the Shrine Band. During World War II, Ralston was one of those area citizens given special flight training for emergency purposes. Like his son, Dick, who served as a Navy carrier pilot, Melvin loved flight, and for many years owned and flew his own small plane. In addition to his love of the out-on-doors, music, and flying, he was an ardent supporter and fan of local athletic teams. Ralston is survived by his wife, Nina; by his daughter, Dorothy, of Madison, Wisc. And by six grandchildren, David Batt and Susan Batt Racine of Madison, Wis., and Andrew, Kathryn, Robin and Leslie Ralston of Washington, D.C., Berkeley, Cal., Princeton, Fl., and Baltimore, Md., respectively. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church, Geneva, on Thursday, January 23, with the Rev. Donald F. Marsh officiating. Mrs. Norval Lomax accompanied the congregation which sang, “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” and “For All the Saints Who from Their Labor Rest.” Pallbearers were Hugh Wilkins, John O’Brien, Warren Rischling, Ben Fussell, Don Miller, and Jim Batt.
