Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2007, at the Holechek Funeral Home Chapel in Oshkosh with Wayne Fraass, P.M.A. and Sharon Paulsen officiating. Interment will be in Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen with military honors by the Nebraska National Guard and the V.F.W. Post #5379. Melvin LeRoy was born on June 7, 1930, in Tipton, Iowa, to George and Luella (Schweitzer) Sissel. Mel grew up in Tipton where he received his education. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1948 and worked at Alcoa in Davenport, Iowa. Mel married Helen Rae Nighbert on June 9, 1951, at Rochester, Iowa. They made their home at Tipton, Iowa, and then moved to Swisher, Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lincoln, Neb., North Bend, Neb., Lewellen, Neb. and Oshkosh, Neb. Mel joined the United States Navy on Jan. 8, 1952 and served until Dec. 12, 1955 when he was honorably discharged. He was employed by Square D in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and later transferred to Lincoln, Neb. Mel and Helen bought a bowling alley in North Bend, Neb. in 1975. They also ran a vending company. Mel was active in the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department and served on the city council. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Mel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a kind man with a dry sense of humor that will be missed greatly. Mel is survived by his sons, Wayne and wife Lea Sissel of Broomfield, Colo., Kyle and wife Paula Sissel of Oshkosh, and Darroll and wife Kathy Sissel of North Bend, Neb.; six grandchildren, Karly Sissel, Jessica Rinaker, Christopher Sissel, Blake Sissel, Ashley Sissel, and Sean Sissel; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Sissel, Reese Rinaker and Amaya Ronk; brothers, George and wife Peg Sissel of DeWitt, Iowa, and John and wife Darlene Sissel of Anamosa, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen on Aug. 29, 2007, and his parents.
