Berkland, the son of Andrew and Clara (Benson) Berkland, was born June 18, 1924, on the family farm near Depew. He passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, surrounded by his family, at the age of 90. He was baptized on July 9, 1924 at the South Church. He was confirmed in August of 1937 at St. John's Lutheran Church. He graduated from Fenton High School in 1942 and attended Waldorf College in Forest City for one year. He then started farming with his father and lived on the family farm for 90 years until Melvin and Violet moved to Lakeside Assisted Living in Emmetsburg in July of 2014. On Oct. 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Violet DeWall of Fenton. To this union two children were born, Marlin Wesley and Karen Marie. Melvin was a Farmers Hybrid-Asgrow seed salesman for 50 years. He was an active Gideon member, speaking in many churches and distributing Bibles. He was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Depew where he held many offices over the years. He is especially remembered for his 46 years of teaching Sunday School. He influenced many, especially high school young men and women. He was always uplifting, optimistic and never met a stranger. He loved his family, especially his grandsons and always shared words of advice. He was a faithful visitor to shut-ins and friends and family who were residents of Lakeside Lutheran Home. Left to cherish Melvin's memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Violet of Emmetsburg; two children, Marlin (Jo) Berkland of Minneapolis, MN; Karen (Thomas) Hagen of Pomeroy; his grandsons, Aaron and friend, Kelsey Hubert of Worthington, MN; Adam and fiance, Elise Edgerton of Durham, NC and Nathan Knowles of New York; sister-in-law, Agatha Berkland; brother-in-law, Richard Purdy; and many nieces and nephews and their families; relatives and friends. He has been preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ernest; Bert; Amos; Raymond; Bennie; Oscar; and Clarence; his sisters, Ida Cody and Eunice Purdy.
